An Unexpected Discovery
In 2011, Rethnamma and her family in Alappuzha, Kerala, embarked on a project to dig a borewell, hoping to secure a source of clean drinking water. After
digging past 75 feet, their efforts yielded only muddy water, prompting them to decide on sealing the well. As the plumber was finishing the work, a curious onlooker lit a match, and to everyone's astonishment, a flame erupted from the borewell's opening. This startling event initially caused panic, with many viewing it as a dangerous phenomenon that should be avoided. However, instead of abandoning the well, Rethnamma saw an opportunity to salvage the investment and prevent waste. She proposed connecting the pipe to their kitchen stove, a decision that would change their daily lives in a remarkable way, transforming a failed water source into a unique energy solution.
Safe Kitchen Transition
Following the initial shock, Rethnamma's pragmatic approach led her to connect the borewell's pipe to their kitchen stove. The first culinary experiment involved making black coffee, which proved to be uneventful, with no discernible difference in smell or taste. Her husband, Rameshan, harbored significant initial fears, worried about potential safety hazards that could affect the entire village. To mitigate these concerns, the family adopted a cautious approach, even keeping buckets of water readily available overnight as a safety measure. Despite their apprehension, no unusual incidents occurred. The plumber, upon returning and re-examining the setup, confirmed its safety. Gradually, their fears subsided, and the family continued to rely on the borewell gas for all their cooking needs. This unconventional energy source has proven to be not only safe but also economically beneficial, allowing them to save approximately Rs 10,000 annually on LPG expenses, a substantial relief for their household budget.
Expert Confirmation & Usage
The unique situation in Rethnamma's household attracted the attention of experts from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). Teams dispatched to the site conducted thorough investigations and confirmed that the gas emanating from the borewell was indeed methane. While no significant underground gas reserves were identified in the immediate vicinity, traces of similar gases were reported in nearby borewells. Notably, no other household in the area had attempted to utilize this naturally occurring gas for domestic purposes. Officials from the GSI clarified that the use of such naturally emitted gas for household cooking purposes does not contravene any legal regulations. Permissions are generally required only for the extraction of gas for industrial or commercial applications. Therefore, the family's innovative use of methane for their daily cooking needs was deemed permissible, highlighting the absence of legal impediments for this specific household application of a natural resource.
