A Life Defined by
Gobind Lal, affectionately known as ‘Gobind Veerji,’ lived a life that transcended physical boundaries. Born with a condition that restricted his height
and mobility, he spent his entire life in a wheelchair. Despite these challenges, he never let them define him. He embraced life with a joyful spirit and an unyielding determination. His story is a testament to the power of the human spirit. He chose to dedicate his life to teaching mathematics at his home, impacting the lives of at least 60-70 students daily, up until a month before his passing. His legacy is one of resilience, inspiration, and the profound impact of teaching.
Overcoming the Obstacles
The path Gobind chose was not without its hurdles. When applying for undergraduate courses, he faced initial resistance from colleges that were hesitant about his ability to participate in practicals. Undeterred, he pursued a Bachelor's in Mathematics through correspondence from Panjab University, proving that he could succeed despite the obstacles. He also designed a special vehicle to suit his height, eliminating the need for dependence. Even the physical barriers did not hinder his resolve. His short stature and physical limitations were never a source of discouragement.
A Teacher’s True Calling
Gobind's love for teaching began in Class X when he helped his classmates excel in mathematics. This experience ignited a passion that would shape his life. For over 37 years, he taught mathematics at his home, missing not a single class. His home classes required advanced booking, a testament to his popularity. He viewed teaching not just as a profession, but as his 'soul,' a reason for his existence. He chose to teach from his home, even though several schools offered him a job. His use of technology, like LED screens and tablets, helped him prepare notes, demonstrating his adaptability.
Impact and Inspiration
Gobind 'Veerji' was more than just a teacher; he was an inspiration to many. His former student, Rina Singla, now a maths teacher, credits him for her career choice. Gobind's students viewed him as family, and Teacher's Day was a festive occasion at his home, filled with celebrations and appreciation. His students were loyal and frequently visited with gifts, expressing their gratitude for his guidance. Gobind’s determination and positive attitude left a lasting impression on everyone around him. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his students, and the community he served. He truly lived a life that was taller than his physical stature.
His Final Days
Gobind Veerji's health declined in his final months. He suffered a heart attack six months before his passing, and doctors advised against surgery. His younger brother, Sunil Kumar Kukreja, revealed that he passed away late on a Monday following another heart attack at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in Ludhiana. Despite facing serious health challenges, Gobind's impact continued till his final days. His passing marked the end of an era, but his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. He was 59 years old when he passed.
