In a disturbing incident at a Mira Road construction site, two security guards, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen, were brutally stabbed. The assailant,
identified as Jaib Ansari, a 31-year-old science graduate, approached the guards under the guise of seeking directions. He then reportedly interrogated them about their religious beliefs before launching a knife attack when they refused to recite a verse. The motive behind this violent act remained unclear initially, prompting the Naya Nagar police to arrest Ansari. The gravity of the situation and the potential for a deeper motive led to the case being transferred to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for a more thorough investigation.

The Maharashtra ATS, following Ansari's arrest, conducted a raid on his residence, uncovering significant evidence. Among the findings were handwritten notes where Ansari explicitly stated his aspiration to join the Islamic State (ISIS) and described the stabbing incident as his initial move towards this goal. This discovery strongly indicated a radicalized mindset. Further investigation revealed that Ansari, despite being a science graduate, had spent several years in the United States and had returned to India after failing to secure employment there. Living in isolation in Mira Road, he worked as an online chemistry tutor. Authorities now believe his radicalization likely occurred during this period of solitude, fueled by internet exposure. His digital devices, including his mobile phone and laptop, are being meticulously examined to trace any potential communication with overseas handlers and ascertain the extent of his online indoctrination.
Official Reactions and Scope
The incident prompted a strong reaction from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who assured a comprehensive investigation. He suggested that the case pointed towards self-radicalization, noting the recovery of certain books and incriminating materials from Ansari's home. The Chief Minister emphasized that the investigation would extend beyond the accused to identify any individuals or networks potentially involved in his radicalization process. The ATS and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are collaborating, with the state government pledging full support. The focus is on unraveling any conspiracy and understanding the full extent of ideological influence that may have led to this attack, especially given the mention of a desire to attack members of the Hindu community in the name of jihad.
