Stricter Fitness Guidelines Unveiled
Air India is ushering in a significant policy shift that directly ties cabin crew's employment status and income to their adherence to new health and fitness
benchmarks. This comprehensive program, set to commence on May 1st, introduces rigorous standards for Body Mass Index (BMI) and functional fitness, with consequences for those who fall outside the acceptable parameters. The airline's aim is to foster a culture of wellness and ensure crew members maintain the required physical condition for their demanding roles. This initiative represents a notable change in how cabin crew performance is evaluated, moving beyond traditional metrics to incorporate a more direct assessment of physical well-being, which could have a tangible impact on daily operations and crew schedules.
Understanding BMI Categories
The new policy defines specific BMI ranges crucial for cabin crew eligibility. A BMI score between 18 and 24.9 is designated as the 'normal' and preferred range. Falling below this, a BMI under 18, classifies a crew member as underweight; while potentially permissible, it necessitates a thorough medical evaluation and functional assessment to ensure continued eligibility. Crew members with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 are categorized as overweight. This range may still be acceptable provided the individual successfully passes a functional fitness test. However, any BMI reading of 30 or higher is classified as obese and will not be tolerated under the new regulations, leading to immediate action.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
Individuals who do not meet the stipulated BMI criteria will face immediate repercussions. Those identified as underweight or overweight will be removed from active flight duties, a process known as derostering, and will be required to undergo a functional assessment. Failure to pass this assessment will result in being placed on 'loss of pay' status until the required fitness standards are achieved. For crew members classified as obese (BMI 30 and above), the policy mandates immediate derostering and a loss of pay. These individuals will be given a defined period to reduce their BMI to fall within the acceptable range before they can resume their duties. This stringent approach underscores the airline's commitment to maintaining a highly fit cabin crew.
Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
Air India's communication to its staff emphasizes that the initial phase of this policy is designed to raise awareness about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and to acclimate crew members to the process of managing their weight within the appropriate categories. The airline views this as a preparatory step towards implementing even more rigorous fitness standards in the future. The policy is applicable to all cabin crew, including those currently in active service and those undergoing training. This development aligns with the broader restructuring efforts within Air India since its acquisition by the Tata Group in January 2022, reflecting a renewed focus on operational efficiency and employee well-being.
