A significant shift in weather patterns has impacted Uttar Pradesh, moving from intense summer heat to severe storm activity that has tragically resulted
in 33 fatalities over the past 48 hours. These powerful storms, characterized by dust storms and heavy showers, have caused considerable damage, uprooting trees and structures. In response to these dangerous conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued crucial warnings for the upcoming 24-hour period, emphasizing the potential for widespread disruption and further danger. The alerts are designed to provide residents with advance notice and encourage necessary precautions to mitigate risks associated with these extreme weather events.
Orange Alert Details
An 'Orange Alert' has been activated for key areas including Lucknow and Kanpur, signifying a high risk of severe weather phenomena. Residents in these regions, along with districts like Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Hardoi, Sitapur, Rae Bareli, Gonda, Shravasti, Lakhimpur Kheri, Farrukhabad, Shahjahanpur, and Pilibhit, should anticipate thunderstorms, substantial hailstorms, and heavy rainfall. The forecasted conditions include wind speeds ranging from 40 to 60 kmph, accompanied by moderate rain and isolated instances of hailstorms. This alert urges heightened awareness and preparedness for potentially damaging weather conditions across these specific districts.
Yellow Alert Districts
Beyond the Orange Alert areas, a 'Yellow Alert' has been declared for an additional 24 districts, indicating expected moderate weather activity. This includes important urban and surrounding areas such as Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida), Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Moradabad, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, and Deoria. In these locations, the forecast predicts lightning and windstorms with wind speeds anticipated to be between 30 and 50 kmph. While not as severe as the Orange Alert, these conditions still warrant caution and adherence to safety guidelines.
Casualties and Response
The recent severe weather has unfortunately led to significant loss of life, with reported casualties including 16 deaths in Bhadohi, nine in Fatehpur, five in Budaun, two in Chandauli, and one in Sonbhadra. In light of these tragic incidents, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has extended his deepest sympathies to the affected families. He has issued directives to district magistrates, ensuring that urgent assistance and compensation are provided to the bereaved within 24 hours. Authorities are strongly advising the public to remain indoors during these storm periods and to avoid seeking shelter under trees or near electrical poles, particularly during lightning events, to ensure personal safety.
Ghaziabad Weather Shift
Ghaziabad and the wider National Capital Region (NCR) experienced an abrupt weather transformation, with heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and a dust storm hitting areas like Niwari in Modinagar overnight. While the cooler temperatures have brought a welcome respite from the heat for residents, there is growing concern among the local population regarding the potential damage to crops from the hailstorms. This sudden change underscores the unpredictable nature of the current weather patterns affecting Uttar Pradesh and its neighboring regions.
