Key Dates & Timeline
The highly anticipated Amarnath Yatra for 2026 is scheduled to commence on July 3rd and will continue for an extended period, concluding on August 28th,
coinciding with Raksha Bandhan. This provides devotees a generous window of 57 days to undertake the pilgrimage. Mark your calendars, as the essential registration process for all pilgrims will officially open on April 15th, 2026. Prior to the commencement of the Yatra itself, a significant spiritual precursor, the Pratham Puja, is slated to be held on June 29th, 2026, on the auspicious occasion of Jyeshtha Purnima. This sacred ceremony invokes the blessings of Lord Shiva for the thousands of devotees who annually undertake this arduous yet rewarding journey to witness the divine ice lingam.
Registration Essentials
Pilgrims planning to join the Amarnath Yatra in 2026 must adhere to a structured registration process managed by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). Registration can be completed through two convenient methods: online or offline. For the digital route, interested individuals can utilize the official SASB website or the dedicated mobile application, 'Shri Amarnathji Yatra'. The online process involves OTP verification for both your registered mobile number and email address. A crucial requirement for online applicants is the upload of a scanned Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC), which must be issued on or after April 8th, 2026, along with a recent passport-size photograph. Alternatively, offline registration commences on April 15th at designated bank branches, operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants opting for offline registration will need to present their CHC, issued by an authorized doctor, and a valid form of identification such as an Aadhaar card. Biometric authentication will be seamlessly integrated using the eKYC system at these branches. A nominal registration fee of Rs 150 per person applies, and a mandatory RFID card is required for all participants in the 2026 Yatra. After successful registration, pilgrims must collect their RFID card from specified centers in Jammu and Kashmir following biometric verification. Entry to the Yatra through the Domail or Chandanwari gates is strictly prohibited without this essential RFID card.
Eligibility Criteria
To ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board has established clear eligibility criteria for the 2026 Yatra. The pilgrimage is open to individuals strictly between the ages of 13 and 70 years. Pregnant women who are beyond their sixth week of gestation are not permitted to undertake the journey due to health risks. A fundamental requirement for every applicant is a valid Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC). This certificate must be issued by a medical provider officially listed on the SASB website, confirming the applicant's fitness to undertake the arduous trek. Adherence to these guidelines is paramount for a safe and spiritually fulfilling experience.
Choosing Your Route
Devotees undertaking the Amarnath Yatra have the option to choose between two distinct routes, each offering a different experience and level of challenge. The traditional Pahalgam route is approximately 46 kilometers in length one way and is characterized by a more gradual ascent, making it an ideal choice for first-time pilgrims or those who prefer a less strenuous climb. In contrast, the Baltal route is significantly shorter, covering about 14 kilometers one way. However, this route is considerably steeper and presents a more challenging trek, often preferred by pilgrims seeking a quicker journey to the shrine. For those who may find the full trek challenging, helicopter services are available on both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes, providing access up to the Panchtarni base camp, thereby easing the journey for a wider range of pilgrims.
