Platform Extensions Underway
Eastern Railway has embarked on a crucial project to lengthen several platforms at the historic Howrah Station, a move designed to facilitate the seamless
arrival and departure of longer passenger trains. Specifically, platforms 14 and 15 have already seen substantial modifications. Platform 14 has been extended to a length of 581 meters, enabling it to accommodate the full 22 to 24 coaches of Mail and Express trains. Similarly, platform 15's length has been significantly increased from its previous 312 meters to a new 591 meters. These enhancements are critical for handling increased passenger volume and ensuring trains operate at their maximum capacity. The investment in these upgrades signifies a commitment to modernizing one of India's busiest railway hubs and preparing it for future demands. The work on these platforms is part of a larger strategic vision to improve passenger throughput and operational flexibility within the Eastern Railway network.
Investing in Modernization
Significant financial resources are being channeled into the modernization of Howrah Station's infrastructure to meet evolving railway standards. An investment of Rs 3 crore has been allocated for the extension of platform number 24, which has now been made 635 meters long. Furthermore, platform number 16 has undergone a comprehensive renovation as part of a Rs 15 crore project. This extensive work on platform 16 ensures that even trains with up to 12 coaches can be accommodated efficiently, complete with modern amenities for passengers. This dual approach of extending platforms for longer trains and renovating existing ones with upgraded facilities highlights a holistic strategy to improve the overall passenger experience at Howrah Station. These investments are crucial for maintaining the station's status as a key transportation node and ensuring it can effectively serve the growing number of travelers.
Future Ready Platforms
Eastern Railway's commitment to passenger convenience extends to further platform enhancements, with plans to extend platforms 10, 11, 12, and 13 to varying lengths, including 542 meters and 591 meters. This progressive expansion aims to ensure that no passenger is inconvenienced by the station's limitations. As announced by Shibram Majhi, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of ER, these strategic upgrades are essential for the station's future operational capacity. The CPRO also highlighted that platforms 1, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 are being prepared to handle 22-coach LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) trains. The introduction of LHB coaches signifies a shift towards safer and more comfortable travel, and ensuring these platforms can accommodate them is paramount. This forward-thinking approach underscores the railway's dedication to providing a superior and more secure travel environment for all passengers.
Enhanced Passenger Amenities
Beyond platform extensions, Howrah Station is also focusing on enhancing passenger amenities to improve the overall travel experience. Two new Executive Lounges have been established, catering to the needs of discerning travelers in both the older and newer sections of the station. In a significant move to improve accessibility, two new lifts have been installed at the Upper Class Waiting Hall, representing an investment of Rs 3 crore. These lifts are specifically designed to make it easier for Divyangjan (differently-abled) passengers and senior citizens to navigate the station and access facilities with greater comfort and ease. These additions reflect a comprehensive approach to station development, prioritizing not just train capacity but also the comfort, safety, and accessibility for all passengers, thereby reinforcing Howrah Station's role as a leading railway hub.
