Election Day Essentials
West Bengal's Assembly elections in 2026 are scheduled across two distinct phases: April 23rd and April 29th, with vote counting commencing on May 4th.
The Election Commission is committed to a secure and efficient voting process statewide. For the initial phase alone, over 3.6 crore citizens are expected to cast their ballots across 16 districts. Districts like Murshidabad, Purba Medinipur, and Paschim Medinipur are anticipating high voter turnout. A total of 2,926 candidates are vying for positions, spread across 152 constituencies in the first phase and 142 in the second. Polling stations will be operational from 7 am to 6 pm on both polling days. To ensure a seamless experience, voters are strongly encouraged to arrive at their assigned polling stations punctually and to have their valid identification documents readily accessible. While voter information slips are useful, they are not a mandatory requirement for voting.
Valid Identification for Voters
To cast your vote in the West Bengal Assembly elections, presenting a valid form of identification is paramount. The Election Commission of India provides several options. The most commonly accepted document is the Voter ID card, also known as the EPIC (Electoral Photo Identity Card). Alternatively, other government-issued photo IDs are acceptable, including your Aadhaar card, PAN card, Passport, or Driving Licence. For those without these, a bank or post office passbook that includes your photograph, or even pension documents bearing your photograph, can be used. Government service identity cards are also valid. Additionally, NPR smart cards and health insurance smart cards issued by the Ministry of Labour can serve as proof of identity. It is crucial to ensure that the document you choose to present is current and clearly displays your photograph.
Your Polling Day Checklist
On election day, voters are advised to prepare meticulously to ensure a smooth voting process. Firstly, confirm the exact location of your designated polling booth and verify that your name is listed on the electoral roll. Carrying your voter slip, if you have one, along with a valid photo identification document, will expedite the verification process. It's also beneficial to familiarize yourself with the candidates contesting in your constituency and review their manifestos beforehand. At the polling station, please join the queue and patiently follow all instructions given by the polling staff. After casting your vote using the EVM (Electronic Voting Machine), remember to verify your selection on the VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) machine. Your finger will be inked after you have voted, signifying your participation.
What to Leave Behind
To maintain the integrity and decorum of the polling environment, certain items are strictly prohibited at polling booths. Do not wear or carry any clothing, accessories, or promotional material that displays political party symbols or campaign slogans. The use of mobile phones inside polling booths is forbidden; ensure yours is switched off or left outside the premises as per the guidelines. Taking photographs or videos within the polling area is also not allowed. Furthermore, refrain from accepting any money or gifts offered by political representatives, as this constitutes electoral malpractice. Engaging in impersonation to vote on behalf of someone else is a serious offense with legal consequences and must be avoided at all costs.
Comfort and Safety Items
While adhering to the restrictions, voters can carry a few essential items to enhance their comfort, especially if expecting to wait in queues. A water bottle is advisable, particularly during warmer periods. If you are an elderly voter or have a disability, carrying necessary aids or requesting assistance is permissible. Polling stations are equipped with facilities such as ramps to accommodate voters with mobility challenges. However, it is crucial to avoid bringing any sharp objects like knives. Lighters or any other flammable items are also prohibited. Other restricted items will be clearly indicated according to polling station regulations. It's paramount to follow the specific rules regarding mobile phones, ensuring they are either switched off or kept outside the booth as directed.
