A Historic Inaugural Run
The much-anticipated first train from Srinagar to Jammu commenced its journey, marking a significant milestone in the region's infrastructure development.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated this crucial Vande Bharat service, heralding a new chapter for travelers. Passengers on board represented a diverse cross-section of society, including military personnel, students, and families, all eager to experience this enhanced mode of transport. The introduction of this direct rail link is poised to dramatically reduce travel duration and costs, fostering greater economic and social integration across Jammu and Kashmir. This development addresses long-standing challenges posed by the arduous road journey between the two cities, a route often disrupted by landslides and adverse weather conditions.
Personal Journeys, Shared Excitement
On board the inaugural service, the atmosphere was electric. One passenger, Gagan, a soldier stationed in Kashmir, expressed profound relief as he journeyed home to Rohtak, Haryana. His wife was expecting their first child the very next day, and the train's swift travel time meant he could be there for the momentous occasion. Having previously navigated various transport options during his leave, Gagan emphasized the substantial time savings and ease offered by this direct rail connection. The journey itself provided breathtaking views of South Kashmir's verdant landscapes, snow-capped mountains, and sprawling orchards, captivating passengers until the train entered the tunnels of the Jammu region. The comfort, ample legroom, and the ability to move around were frequently cited as major advantages over previous travel methods.
Convenience and Certainty Redefined
The new train service offers more than just speed; it brings a much-needed element of certainty to travel. Aakash and Deepti Goyal, a family who had been exploring Kashmir, learned about the direct train to Jammu just a day prior and immediately booked their tickets. They had initially planned a road trip to Jammu followed by a train home, but the new service presented a far more convenient option. Similarly, Sajad, a Kashmiri travel agent, highlighted the operational benefits. Previously, road closures due to landslides caused significant disruptions and booking complications for his clients. The train's reliability eliminates this uncertainty, providing a predictable and stress-free travel experience. This newfound certainty is a significant improvement for both individuals and businesses operating in the region, transforming the logistical landscape.
Engineering Marvels and Stops
The 260-kilometer route between Srinagar and Jammu is an engineering feat, traversing challenging terrain. The train made three key stops before reaching its destination: Banihal, Katra (famous for the Vaishno Devi shrine), and Udhampur. Passengers were treated to spectacular views of the Chenab River bridge and navigated through numerous tunnels, including a remarkable 12.77-kilometer tunnel before surfacing at Khari station. An automated announcement drew attention to the Anji Khad bridge, a striking cable-stayed structure soaring 330 meters high. This journey showcased not only the connectivity but also the impressive engineering capabilities that have brought this long-dreamed-of rail link to fruition, fundamentally altering the travel experience for thousands.
A New Era for Travelers
The arrival at Jammu Tawi station was met with satisfaction and anticipation for return journeys. The train’s operational efficiency is evident in its schedule, with multiple services running daily in both directions, completing the roughly 5-hour journey. Passengers like Dharmendra Singh, an armed forces member with 16 years of service in J&K, noted the significant improvement. Previously, reaching his home in Himachal Pradesh involved lengthy road travel that consumed valuable leave time. Now, he can connect with his family more quickly and safely. The sentiment of realizing a long-held dream was echoed by Vinod Kumar, a J&K government employee who witnessed the transformation from conceptualization to reality, appreciating the comfort and ability to move freely during the journey.
