Global Campuses Arrive
Mumbai is on the cusp of a significant academic transformation with the arrival of five world-renowned universities from the United Kingdom, the United States,
and Australia, all slated to commence operations for the 2026 academic year. This expansion, facilitated by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, signifies a pivotal moment in India's higher education landscape. Among the institutions establishing a presence are the University of Bristol, the University of York, the University of Western Australia, the University of Aberdeen, and the Illinois Institute of Technology. These universities, all holding top global rankings, will bring their accredited degree programs directly to Indian students, aiming to cater to the growing demand for international-standard education within the country. The establishment of these campuses aligns with the government's vision to foster a more globally integrated and accessible higher education system, providing students with diverse academic choices closer to home.
University of Aberdeen
The historic University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495 in Scotland, is set to launch its Indian campus in August 2026. Initially operating from a temporary location in Powai, Mumbai, with plans for a future permanent site in CIDCO's Educity, Navi Mumbai, the university is ranked 262nd globally. Annual fees are projected to range from ₹12 lakh to ₹18.7 lakh, depending on the chosen program. Aberdeen will offer undergraduate programs following a four-year Scottish structure, comprising two foundational years and then specialization. For postgraduate studies, an MBA tailored for working professionals with at least two years of experience will be available. Core course offerings include Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computing Science, Economics, and Business Administration. The degrees awarded will adhere to UK academic standards, ensuring students receive a UK-accredited qualification. The university is also introducing the Aberdeen Pioneer Scholarship, offering eligible students a tuition fee waiver of ₹2 lakh for the September 2026 intake. Admissions will consider Class XII marks for undergraduates and graduation marks for postgraduates, along with a personal transcript.
University of York
The University of York, ranked 169th globally, will establish its first international campus outside Europe in Mumbai, located at One Boulevard, Powai. Commencing operations for the 2026 cohort, the campus will offer a selection of nine undergraduate and three postgraduate courses spanning Business and Management, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Economics, and Finance. Students can anticipate annual fees between ₹12.5 lakh and ₹16.5 lakh. A key feature of the York experience will be access to both local and international internships, along with the possibility of semester-exchange programs at their UK campus. A blended faculty model, combining international academics with local faculty, will be employed. The merit-based York Academic Excellence Scholarship will be available, requiring students to maintain a minimum 70% academic score for annual renewal. Admission to York will involve a comprehensive assessment of Class XII or graduation marks, alongside a mandatory interview with the admissions committee.
University of Bristol
Ranked 51st globally, the University of Bristol is making its international debut with the Bristol's Mumbai Enterprise Campus, situated in Cignus Powai. This new venture is set to welcome its first students in August 2026, with an initial limited cohort of no more than 250 students to ensure high educational quality. The annual fee structure is estimated to be between ₹15 lakh and ₹17 lakh, varying by specific course. Bristol's offerings will include programs in Data Science, Economics, Finance, and Immersive Arts, all designed to align with India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. A significant development is an MoU with the Government of Maharashtra, which includes a fully funded scholarship providing a 100% tuition fee waiver for up to 10 undergraduate students for the entire duration of their program. Further support includes a partnership and a substantial philanthropic gift from the Shanta Foundation. Admissions will require evaluation of Class XII or graduation marks, a personal statement detailing academic interests, and an academic reference.
University of Western Australia
The University of Western Australia (UWA), holding a global ranking of 77, is establishing its Mumbai campus at Waterstones, Marol, Andheri East. While specific fee structures are yet to be announced, the campus is designed to accommodate approximately 1,000 students. For its September 2026 intake, UWA will initially focus on a limited number of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Business, Data Science, and related interdisciplinary fields to maintain program quality. To support aspiring students, a range of merit-based and need-sensitive scholarships will be available, with detailed information to be released alongside admissions announcements. The faculty will consist of a blend of academics from Australia and locally recruited Indian staff. The admission process will involve an assessment of Class XII or graduation marks, complemented by a statement of purpose for undergraduate applicants and a resume for postgraduate candidates.
Illinois Institute of Technology
The Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech), ranked 591st globally, is setting up its Mumbai campus within the Godrej Business District in Vikhroli. This location places students in close proximity to over 100 companies, including multinational corporations. The curriculum offered in Mumbai will closely mirror that of its Chicago campus, with programs available at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, and Business Administration. The estimated annual fees for these programs will range from ₹16 lakh to ₹20 lakh. Illinois Tech employs a US-style admission evaluation process, with SAT scores being optional. The admissions committee will consider factors such as the level of coursework, academic performance in honors, Advanced Placement (AP), or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, a personal statement, and extracurricular involvement for undergraduate applicants. Graduate admissions will involve a holistic review to assess a candidate's potential.
