Widespread Crop Devastation
A wave of unseasonal rainfall has swept across Uttar Pradesh, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Over 4,053 hectares of agricultural land have
been affected, resulting in substantial crop damage for 14,207 farmers. Lalitpur district stands out as particularly hard-hit, with 1,650.75 hectares experiencing crop loss and impacting 3,142 farmers. This region recorded an astonishing 118.6 mm of rain in March, a staggering 291% above the usual average of 30.3 mm. Other districts, including Saharanpur, have also reported damage, with 11 hectares and approximately 44 farmers affected across five villages. The most severe impacts were observed between March 15 and March 22, a critical period for agriculture, especially with wheat harvesting in full swing.
Impending Weather Threats
The meteorological department has issued a stark warning of impending adverse weather conditions. From April 3 to April 5, Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience a fresh bout of thunderstorms, accompanied by hailstorms and strong winds. This forecast is attributed to a western disturbance, currently situated around eastern Iran, which is predicted to influence the region. Experts are concerned that crops nearing harvest, such as arhar, mustard, and matar, are particularly vulnerable to this upcoming weather onslaught, in addition to the already impacted wheat crop.
Governmental Response and Aid
In light of the widespread crop damage, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has mandated a coordinated effort between the Agriculture and Relief departments. The primary objective is to conduct swift surveys of crop losses and ensure the prompt disbursement of compensation to all affected farmers. To facilitate this process, farmers are encouraged to report their crop losses using the toll-free number 14447 (KRPH). This reporting channel is linked to vital schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme. Additional support and reporting options are available through the Crop Insurance App, a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot (7065514447), and the official portal pmfby.gov.in.
Farmer Advisory for Safety
With the anticipation of further inclement weather, agricultural officials are issuing crucial advice to farmers. They are strongly urged to secure any harvested crops immediately and to avoid leaving produce exposed in open fields. Staying alert and attentive to local advisories is paramount, as the predicted strong winds and hailstorms pose a significant threat of further damage during this sensitive harvest period. This proactive approach aims to mitigate additional losses in the face of the evolving weather patterns.
Detailed Weather Outlook
The meteorological department has provided a detailed forecast for the upcoming days. A fresh western disturbance, originating from eastern Iran, is expected to bring significant weather changes from April 3rd. This will likely result in rainfall, strong winds, and hailstorm activity across much of Uttar Pradesh, potentially lowering temperatures by 2-4°C. For April 3rd, western UP can anticipate thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph, with gusts up to 50 kmph, while eastern UP might see limited activity. April 4th and 5th are projected to bring more widespread thunderstorms with winds of 50-60 kmph across both western and eastern regions, including the likelihood of hailstorms in isolated areas. Most of the state, with the exception of eastern Uttar Pradesh, is forecast to receive above-normal rainfall for April.
