VAT Reduction Initiative
In response to escalating global aviation challenges stemming from the West Asia crisis, the Maharashtra government has implemented a substantial reduction
in the Value Added Tax (VAT) levied on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). Previously set at 18 percent, the VAT has been decreased to 7 percent. This revised rate will remain in effect for a period of six months, concluding on November 14, 2026. The official notification for this significant fiscal measure was issued on May 14, with the new VAT rate becoming applicable from Friday. This strategic policy adjustment is intended to provide much-needed financial relief to airlines operating within the state and to ensure that airfares remain stable for the traveling public during this turbulent period.
Addressing Aviation Woes
The ongoing crisis in West Asia has created a ripple effect across the global aviation sector, leading to issues such as airspace closures, operational uncertainties, and a sharp increase in ATF prices. Recognizing these pressures, the Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been actively engaging with state governments to find solutions. Union Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu highlighted that the Ministry of Civil Aviation has been advocating for a reduction in state-level VAT on ATF for some time, especially during these critical times. He expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for promptly notifying the VAT reduction from 18% to 7%, a move that aligns with broader efforts to support the aviation industry's resilience.
State's Aviation Hub
Maharashtra stands as a pivotal hub for aviation in India, boasting 16 operational airports and handling the highest annual air traffic among all states. The state accommodates approximately 75 million passengers annually, translating to around 200,000 daily travelers. The recent VAT reduction on ATF is expected to have a significant positive impact on flight operations across all these airports. By easing the financial burden on airlines, the measure aims to prevent a surge in airfares, which would otherwise be driven up by escalating global fuel costs and operational complexities. This initiative directly benefits the vast number of passengers who rely on air travel within and through Maharashtra.
