A Dangerous Encounter
In a startling incident on the Haiderganj–Bazaar Khala road in Lucknow, a 62-year-old resident named Harishankar Yadav experienced a terrifying brush with
danger. While on his motorcycle, a sharp, abrasive kite string, identified as 'manja', ensnared his neck. This perilous encounter, which occurred on a Sunday, resulted in a laceration to his throat. However, Yadav's life was dramatically spared due to the presence of his helmet, and more specifically, the sturdy strap that was fastened. This crucial piece of safety equipment acted as a barrier, significantly limiting the depth of the cut and preventing what could have been a fatal injury. The victim was en route to visit his sister in Aishbagh when the unforeseen incident took place, leaving him shaken but alive, underscoring the severe risks posed by such materials.
The Perils of Manja
The material responsible for the incident, 'manja', is a kite string notoriously coated with powdered glass, making it exceptionally sharp and dangerous. This substance has been officially prohibited by law since 2017 due to its inherent hazardous properties, which pose a grave threat to both humans and the avian population. Despite the clear ban and the known risks, the sale and use of 'manja' regrettably persist in various pockets of the city. This continued disregard for safety regulations perpetuates a cycle of dangerous incidents. The state capital, Lucknow, had recently witnessed a disturbing series of injuries linked to 'manja', with one fatality and approximately 20 other individuals sustaining harm within a single month, highlighting the persistent and widespread danger this illegal product presents.
A Lifesaving Device
Harishankar Yadav's fortunate survival can be directly attributed to his adherence to motorcycle safety protocols. By wearing a helmet, he ensured that a critical safety feature, the chin strap, was in place and functional. This strap, designed to secure the helmet firmly to the head, inadvertently became a vital shield against the razor-sharp 'manja'. Instead of slicing deep into his neck, the string was intercepted by the robust material and tension of the strap, which effectively blunted its cutting power. Yadav himself expressed profound relief and acknowledgment of this protective mechanism, stating that without the helmet, the outcome of the incident could very well have been fatal. His experience serves as a potent reminder of the life-saving importance of consistently using protective gear while riding.
