Each individual pod within this system is engineered for efficiency and passenger comfort, measuring 3.5 meters in length, 1.47 meters in width, and 1.8 meters in height. These dimensions allow for agile movement through the designated pathways. Designed to accommodate small groups, each pod will have a seating capacity for approximately six passengers. While operating, these pods will achieve a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour, striking a balance between speed and safety within the urban setting. Financials and Fare Structure
The BKC Pod Taxi project has received official approval, with its estimated cost set at approximately Rs 1,017 crore. However, it's important to note that the final determined fare will be officially announced at a later stage, during the project's 'conditions precedent' phase. This fare structure was carefully determined after conducting stated preference surveys, comparing it with existing modes of transport.
Understanding Commuter Preferences
The fare of Rs 21 per kilometer for the Pod Taxi service has been meticulously decided based on detailed surveys of current auto and bus users in the BKC area. These surveys aimed to understand their willingness to pay for a more efficient commute. Currently, passengers traveling from Bandra or Kurla to BKC via a metered auto incur a cost of Rs 15.33 per kilometer. Sharing an auto for the same journey typically costs between Rs 30 to Rs 40 per passenger. For those opting for traditional taxis, the cost averages Rs 18.67 per kilometer. Ride-sharing services like Ola and Uber often implement dynamic pricing, which can range from Rs 80 to Rs 100 for the short 2-3 kilometer trips from the stations to BKC. The survey results indicated a strong willingness among commuters to embrace the Pod Taxi service, with approximately 70% of current auto users and 36% of bus users expressing their readiness to pay Rs 21 per kilometer for this enhanced mode of transport.
