A Beloved Attraction Returns
After a five-year absence, the cherished Van Rani toy train service within the sprawling Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) has recommenced its journeys.
This iconic attraction, a favorite for park visitors since the 1970s, was officially relaunched on Saturday afternoon. The initial service, powered by a diesel engine on a 2.7-kilometer route, had ceased operations in 2021 when the tracks sustained severe damage from Cyclone Tauktae. The park's authorities subsequently embarked on an ambitious restoration project to bring the beloved train back to its former glory, ensuring its continued role as a popular gateway to the park's natural wonders for a new generation of explorers.
Green Makeover and New Features
The extensive ₹45 crore restoration project, spearheaded by RITES Ltd, has not only repaired the damaged infrastructure but also introduced significant technological upgrades. The revitalized Van Rani now operates on a completely eco-friendly, battery-powered system, eliminating harmful diesel emissions and contributing to a cleaner environment within the national park. The new train comprises eight coaches: three are 'vista-dome' coaches, offering passengers a breathtaking 180-degree panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, and the remaining five are open-seating coaches designed for comfort and accessibility. This innovative approach ensures a more sustainable and immersive experience for all park visitors who choose to ride the train through the Krishnagiri Upvan area, a section of the park spanning approximately 5.5 square kilometers.
Boosting Eco-Tourism
The relaunch of the Van Rani toy train is expected to significantly invigorate eco-tourism in the region, as highlighted by Union Minister Piyush Goyal during the inauguration ceremony. He emphasized the fortunate position of North Mumbai, hosting an ecological treasure like SGNP, which is teeming with diverse wildlife, including majestic lions and tigers. The park serves as a vital green lung and a sanctuary for numerous species. Goyal noted that residents from surrounding areas like Dahisar, Borivali, and Magathane are indeed privileged to have such a rich biodiversity hotspot in their vicinity. The train's operation through areas where visitors can observe animals in a mini zoo further enhances its appeal, offering an engaging and educational experience that connects people with nature and underscores the importance of conservation efforts within urban environments.
Operational Schedule and Future
The operational schedule for the newly revived Van Rani toy train is anticipated to mirror its previous frequency, with trains running at approximately 30-minute intervals. Departures will likely be contingent on passenger demand, requiring a minimum number of passengers, much like the earlier service, to ensure efficient operations. This flexible approach allows the park management to cater effectively to visitor flow. The train's route meanders through the Krishnagiri Upvan section, providing passengers with opportunities to spot various animals within the park's designated mini zoo area and to fully appreciate the lush biodiversity that SGNP offers. The successful restoration and eco-friendly upgrade of this beloved attraction promise to draw more visitors, fostering a deeper appreciation for the park's natural heritage and its conservation significance.
