A New Approach
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is making a significant investment in cleaner air, deploying an innovative fleet of dust-suction vehicles
to combat the pervasive issue of road dust in Mumbai. This strategic shift marks a departure from the current method of using mist-spraying vans, which were introduced in 2023 as a temporary measure to alleviate high pollution levels. The new vehicles are designed to be far more effective, equipped with battery-powered dust suction machines, integrated brooms, and mist-spraying capabilities, representing a comprehensive solution to airborne particulate matter. Initially, a fleet of 12 such advanced vehicles will be put into service, with the substantial Rs 75 crore contract encompassing not only the acquisition but also two years of operation and maintenance, ensuring their continuous effectiveness in the fight against pollution.
Targeted Dust Control
These sophisticated dust-suction vehicles are slated for deployment in high-traffic areas known for substantial vehicular movement and consequently, elevated dust levels. Locations such as the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and the Western Express Highway (WEH) are prime candidates for this intervention. The primary objective is to maintain dust control, particularly during the winter months when environmental conditions exacerbate pollution. During winter, lower wind speeds allow particulate matter to linger in the atmosphere for extended periods, leading to a noticeable increase in air pollution. The integrated sweepers on these vehicles will diligently collect dust particles, storing them in an internal chamber. Once this chamber is full, it will be efficiently emptied into a dedicated waste collection van, ensuring continuous operation and timely disposal of collected debris at the BMC’s designated processing centers.
Integrated Pollution Mitigation
The new dust-suction vehicles boast a multi-faceted approach to air quality management, rendering standalone mist-spraying vans redundant. In addition to their primary dust collection function, these vehicles are equipped with sprinklers that will activate automatically when pollutant levels rise, releasing a fine mist to further suppress airborne particles. This integrated system ensures a dynamic response to changing air quality conditions, providing a more robust and efficient solution than previous methods. Civic authorities are actively in the process of finalizing the tender for these vehicles, signalling a proactive stance in environmental stewardship. This move aligns with the Mumbai Air Pollution Mitigation Plan released in 2023, which identified road dust as a principal source of pollution, alongside vehicular emissions, garbage burning, and emissions from roadside food vendors. Mumbai has unfortunately experienced persistent poor air quality days over the last three years, largely influenced by ongoing infrastructure and construction projects.
