The Treacherous Descent
GS Sharanya, a 36-year-old IT professional from Kerala, embarked on a trek up Thadiyandamol, Kodagu's highest peak. Arriving on a Wednesday and starting
her ascent early Thursday morning with a group of 12, she reached the summit by 10:40 AM. The descent, however, turned perilous when she inadvertently got separated from her group. Initially walking ahead with two trekkers, she paused to wait for them, only to find they had vanished. Her attempt to rejoin other trekkers she saw earlier also proved fruitless as they were no longer visible by the time she reached their perceived location. This led her deeper into the dense forest as she tried to retrace her steps, ultimately losing her bearings entirely and finding herself isolated.
Resourcefulness and Resilience
With her phone battery critically low, Sharanya managed one last communication with her homestay owner, informing him she was lost and to alert authorities. Her last message, intended for a friend, couldn't be sent before her phone died around 2:45 PM, severing all contact. Faced with this predicament, she found a large rock beside a stream, a spot that became her refuge. She refilled her meager 500ml water bottle from the stream, which became her sole sustenance for the next four days. Despite the absence of food, which she hadn't packed assuming an easy trek, and the unnerving sounds of the wild, including sightings of elephants, Sharanya surprisingly remained calm. She reported not feeling hungry during her ordeal and managed to cope with the nocturnal forest sounds, her tense moments managed with remarkable fortitude.
Unexpected Rescue
After four solitary days, Sharanya's ordeal concluded when a group of locals discovered her in an infrequently visited section of the forest. This remote location, far from typical trekking paths, led to her eventual spotting by the rescue team. Her safe return was met with an emotional reunion, where she was greeted by her uncles, brother, and colleagues from her IT company in Kochi. Despite the harrowing experience, Sharanya expressed no fear of future treks and affirmed her intention to continue exploring the outdoors, underscoring her resilient spirit and love for adventure even after such a challenging encounter with nature.
