AI-Powered Road Surveillance
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is embarking on a significant technological upgrade by implementing an advanced Artificial Intelligence
(AI) dashcam monitoring system. This ambitious project will span an extensive 40,000 kilometers of national highways across the country. The primary goal of this initiative is to dramatically improve the efficiency of highway maintenance operations and elevate safety standards through the deployment of automated surveillance tools. This system, known as Dashcam Analytic Services (DAS), utilizes sophisticated AI and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to continuously assess the real-time condition of the highways. To achieve this, high-resolution dashboard cameras are being installed on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs), which will constantly capture video and image data from the monitored road sections. This data is then meticulously processed by AI-driven models, enabling the system to automatically identify more than 30 different types of road defects. This capability ensures that issues like pavement damage, including potholes, cracks, and surface wear, are detected far more rapidly, leading to quicker responses and more effective maintenance strategies. Beyond just the road surface, the system will also evaluate critical road infrastructure such as streetlights and lane markings, providing a comprehensive overview of highway integrity. Furthermore, to bolster safety checks, NHAI has also planned to conduct night-time surveys at regular intervals, ensuring that safety is maintained around the clock.
Addressing Road Safety Crisis
Road safety continues to be a pressing issue in India, marked by a tragically high number of annual fatalities. Official data reveals a stark reality: between 2020 and 2024, potholes alone were responsible for claiming 9,438 lives across the nation. The state of Uttar Pradesh bears a significant portion of this burden, having reported 5,127 such fatalities within the same five-year period. Following Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh recorded the second-highest number of pothole-related deaths, with 969 fatalities during these years. Other states also faced considerable losses, with Tamil Nadu reporting 612 deaths, Odisha 425, Punjab 414, and Assam 395. The NHAI's new AI dashcam system is a direct response to this critical safety concern, aiming to preemptively address such hazards through continuous monitoring and swift identification of road imperfections that can lead to devastating accidents and loss of life. By leveraging technology, the authority hopes to significantly reduce these preventable deaths and create a safer commuting environment for all citizens.
