A New Era of Rail Travel
Punjab has welcomed a significant addition to its rail network with the inauguration of its very first Amrit Bharat Express. This new weekly service, connecting
the historic city of Amritsar to New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, marks the 65th introduction of this train type nationwide. It's the inaugural Amrit Bharat train to depart from Punjab, highlighting the central government's commitment to providing economical long-distance rail options that don't compromise on passenger comfort. This initiative is specifically designed to cater to the needs of laborers, workers, and middle-class individuals who require affordable travel solutions for extended journeys. The train's route is extensive, traversing through key states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, passing through important cities like Ludhiana, Ambala, Gorakhpur, and Siliguri, thereby extending its reach towards Assam and the Northeast region.
Vande Bharat Comfort, Accessible Fares
The Amrit Bharat Express has been thoughtfully engineered to deliver a travel experience comparable to the premium Vande Bharat trains, with the primary distinction being its non-air-conditioned coaches. This strategic decision ensures that the fares remain significantly more accessible, making it a viable option for a broader segment of the population. Features such as the advanced push-pull technology and modern LHB coaches contribute to a smoother and more stable ride, enhancing overall passenger comfort. Inside, travelers can expect amenities like CCTV cameras for security, robust fire safety systems, convenient mobile charging points, well-maintained modern toilets, and updated interior designs. Even the berth configurations have been refined to allow for easier movement within the coaches during nighttime, underscoring a focus on practical passenger needs throughout the journey.
Connecting Faith and Economy
Beyond its transportation and comfort features, the Amrit Bharat Express holds considerable religious and social importance, particularly for the route it serves. This new direct link facilitates easier travel for devotees wishing to visit the revered Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, a significant pilgrimage site. Additionally, it boosts connectivity to other key tourist destinations such as Jallianwala Bagh and the Attari-Wagah border for the popular retreat ceremony. The service will now enable people from West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar to reach Sri Amritsar Sahib directly, a development that is expected to particularly benefit pilgrims and lower-income families. The introduction of this train aligns with the broader Amrit Bharat train program, which was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 30, 2023, aiming to modernize and expand affordable rail travel across India.
Amritsar Station's Grand Upgrade
In conjunction with the launch of this significant new train service, Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu also revealed ambitious plans for the redevelopment of Amritsar railway station. This comprehensive upgrade project is slated for an investment of approximately Rs 402 crore. Furthermore, a substantial Rs 100 crore has been allocated specifically for the construction of five new platforms, enhancing the station's capacity and efficiency. The envisioned modernization includes the development of a multi-storey complex on the northern side of the station, alongside dedicated commercial spaces. To improve passenger convenience and accessibility, new subways, lifts, and escalators will be installed, complemented by upgraded parking facilities. Notably, a specialized maintenance shed for Vande Bharat trains is also planned for Amritsar, reflecting its growing importance in the national rail network.
