Sudden Outbreak at Abhlod
A festive wedding ceremony in the tribal village of Abhlod, located in Gujarat's Dahod district, was abruptly overshadowed by a widespread health emergency.
Approximately 1,000 attendees were present for the celebration on Monday night. Not long after the wedding feast concluded, a significant number of guests, exceeding 400 individuals, began to exhibit distressing symptoms. The onset of illness was reported around 11 pm, characterized by acute discomfort, and significant vomiting. The sudden and simultaneous affliction of so many guests led to considerable panic within the community, prompting an urgent response from emergency services.
Rapid Emergency Response
As the scale of the health crisis became apparent, local authorities and emergency medical teams mobilized swiftly to provide assistance. Ambulances were dispatched to the scene in large numbers, and private vehicles were also utilized to transport the afflicted to nearby medical facilities. While no fatalities have been recorded to date, a substantial number of individuals, estimated at over 20, required admission to intensive care due to the severity of their condition. Some of the most critically ill were transferred to Zydus Hospital in Dahod for specialized treatment, while approximately 200 individuals with less severe symptoms received primary medical attention directly within the village from dedicated medical teams.
The Wedding Menu
The wedding feast featured a traditional spread that included several popular dishes. The menu comprised paneer curry, a rich lentil dish (dal), rice, and puri, a type of Indian fried bread. A significant item that drew attention was the mango juice, a commonly enjoyed beverage, particularly during mango season. Guests who reported their experiences to medical personnel confirmed consuming these items. The Resident Medical Officer at Zydus Hospital, Dr. Rajiv Damor, noted that approximately 200 individuals complained of poisoning, with about 70 of them being treated at his facility. The ongoing medical interventions focus on managing the symptoms and ensuring the recovery of all affected individuals.
Investigation Underway
In response to the mass food poisoning incident, both the health and food safety departments have launched a thorough investigation. Officials have meticulously collected samples from various components of the meal that was served to the wedding guests. This includes crucial items such as the mango juice, the paneer dish, and other cooked food items. Although an initial assessment did not reveal any obvious signs of spoilage at the scene, the collected samples are undergoing comprehensive laboratory testing and analysis. The findings from these tests are expected to be pivotal in identifying the exact cause of the contamination and determining accountability, with strict action promised against any caterers or organizers found to be responsible.
