Deceptive Scheme Uncovered
In a brazen act of deception, two individuals, identified as Tausif Patel, aged 44, and Siddhinath Pandey, also known as Sunil, aged 43, both residents
of Goregaon, have been arrested by the Mumbai crime branch's Anti-Extortion Cell. Their elaborate scheme involved fabricating a letter purportedly bearing the signature of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the intention of extorting a substantial sum of Rs. 4 lakh from a social worker. The accused reportedly approached the complainant, who dedicates their efforts to supporting underprivileged children through an NGO and also aids old age homes and orphanages, back in March. Posing as journalists, they initiated contact via social media, setting the stage for their fraudulent demands. This meticulous planning highlights a disturbing trend of individuals exploiting positions of trust and public figures for personal gain, preying on the good intentions of those involved in charitable work.
Forged Letter and Pressure Tactics
The deceitful operation escalated when Tausif Patel allegedly sent a voice note via WhatsApp, offering to procure a birthday greeting letter from the esteemed Prime Minister’s Office. Subsequently, a forged congratulatory letter, allegedly doctored to appear official, was dispatched to the complainant on March 20. Following the delivery of this fraudulent document, the accused reportedly commenced intense pressure on the victim, demanding Rs. 4 lakh. The complainant, initially sharing the suspicious letter on social media, promptly deleted it after several friends voiced concerns about its authenticity, suggesting it appeared questionable. Undeterred, the accused persisted in their demands, bombarding the victim with continuous voice notes and messages to coerce them into parting with the money, showcasing a relentless and predatory approach.
Victim's Action and Police Intervention
Recognizing the fraudulent nature of the demands and the suspicious forged letter, the vigilant social worker took a decisive step by approaching the Worli police station. A formal case was registered against the accused, detailing charges of cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy, and extortion. The gravity of the situation prompted the transfer of the case to the specialized Anti-Extortion Cell for thorough investigation. In a swift and effective counter-operation, an official from the Anti-Extortion Cell orchestrated a meticulously planned sting, leading to the successful arrest of Tausif Patel and Siddhinath Pandey. The duo were apprehended precisely when they arrived to collect the ransom amount, ensuring they were caught red-handed. The investigation is ongoing to uncover any further accomplices or similar past incidents involving these individuals.
