Intensive Revision Outcomes
Following an extensive 166-day Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Uttar Pradesh, the state has witnessed a substantial cleansing of its electoral
rolls. The final list, released on Friday, indicates that more than 2.04 crore electors have been removed. This substantial reduction represents a significant 13.21 per cent decrease from the total number of voters registered before the SIR commenced in October of the previous year. Prior to this intensive revision, Uttar Pradesh boasted a voter base of 15.44 crore individuals. The conclusion of the SIR has brought this number down to 13.39 crore, reflecting a comprehensive effort to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the voter registry. This process involved meticulous data review and purification, leading to the removal of a considerable portion of the electorate from the official records.
Demographic Snapshot
The newly published final electoral roll for Uttar Pradesh presents a clear demographic breakdown of its 13.39 crore registered voters. Within this final count, a majority are male, comprising 7.3 crore individuals, which accounts for approximately 54.54 per cent of the total electorate. The female voter population stands at 6.09 crore, making up about 45.46 per cent of the total voters. A small but notable segment of 4,206 electors identify as third gender. Furthermore, the roll highlights the engagement of younger citizens, with 17.63 lakh individuals falling within the 18-19 year age bracket. This information was officially released by Nadeep Rinwa, the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh, providing an updated profile of the state's voting population.
Gender Ratio Improvement
A significant positive development emerging from Uttar Pradesh's updated electoral roll is the improvement in the gender ratio. The final list reveals a gender ratio of 834, a notable enhancement compared to the previous ratio of 824. This improvement signifies a more balanced representation of women within the state's electoral demographics. This betterment is a testament to the effectiveness of the revision process in capturing a more accurate reflection of the population's gender composition and potentially indicates increased female registration or a more precise enumeration of existing voters. The shift in this ratio is a key indicator of progress in achieving greater gender parity in the electoral participation landscape of Uttar Pradesh.
Draft Roll and Objections
The path to the final electoral roll involved several stages, including the publication of a draft list and a period for claims and objections. In the initial phase of the SIR, a draft electoral roll was released on January 6. At this stage, approximately 2.88 crore names had been deleted, leaving 12.55 crore electors on the list. Following this, a dedicated two-month period was allocated for citizens to submit claims and objections. During this phase, as well as in subsequent hearings concerning electors with unmapped enumeration forms and those identified with logical discrepancies in their data, further deletions occurred. These actions led to the removal of an additional 8.15 lakh names from the electoral rolls. However, this period also saw a substantial influx of new voters, with 84.28 lakh names being added to the registry, demonstrating an active and dynamic electoral registration process.
