Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister, Vishnu Deo Sai, has presented a forward-thinking blueprint to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, charting a course for comprehensive
development in the Bastar region. This strategic initiative aims to reshape Bastar, a region long associated with Maoist insurgency, into a prominent tourist destination. The state's vision prioritizes holistic growth by focusing on enhancing visitor experiences and fostering economic opportunities. A significant aspect of this plan involves the 'Mukhyamantri Jan Tourism Promotion Scheme,' a collaborative effort with IRCTC, which will offer 75% financial subsidies to tourists. This scheme is designed to make travel to Bastar more accessible, connecting it with the state capital, Raipur, via special tour packages, thereby opening up this historically challenging region to a wider audience and marking a pivotal shift in its regional identity.
Infrastructure for Exploration
To truly transform Bastar into a captivating tourist hub, substantial investments are being channeled into modernizing its infrastructure. Key projects include the construction of a stunning glass bridge and an exhilarating canopy walk that will allow visitors to traverse through the dense, verdant forests, offering unparalleled views and a unique perspective of the natural landscape. Furthermore, the region is gearing up to offer distinct adventure activities, particularly in Dudhmaras village, situated within the Kanger Valley National Park. This focus on tangible, exciting attractions aims to elevate the visitor experience significantly. Alongside these attractions, the government is committed to bolstering connectivity. Plans are in motion to expand Jagdalpur Airport and construct 228 new roads and 267 bridges, ensuring that even the most remote and previously inaccessible tourist spots within Bastar become easily reachable for exploration and enjoyment.
Theme Corridors & Skills
With an allocated annual budget of Rs 100 crore dedicated to its tourism mission, Bastar is set to witness the development of innovative, theme-based tourism corridors. These meticulously planned corridors are designed to artfully weave together the region's rich natural beauty, vibrant culture, and profound spirituality. They will serve as pathways connecting significant landmarks, including the revered Maa Danteshwari Temple, offering visitors a cohesive and immersive journey. Complementing these infrastructure and thematic developments is a crucial focus on human capital. The state has launched a specialized tourism skill development program, successfully training 45 local youths in essential tourism management practices. This initiative aims to equip the local population with the necessary skills to contribute to and benefit from the burgeoning tourism sector, ensuring authentic cultural exchange and enhanced service delivery.
Policy & Local Engagement
Further bolstering the tourism sector, Chhattisgarh's new industrial policy introduces a range of incentives specifically tailored for investments in tourism-related ventures. This is complemented by a dedicated home-stay policy, rolled out to actively encourage local participation and provide travelers with genuine cultural immersion experiences. This policy is particularly being promoted in the Bastar and Surguja regions, fostering a sense of local ownership and ensuring that visitors can connect with the authentic traditions and lifestyles of the communities. Moreover, iconic natural attractions are receiving a significant upgrade. The famous Chitrakote waterfall, often acclaimed as the 'Niagara of India,' is being outfitted with world-class tourist facilities. To ensure safety and accessibility, security camps and essential services are being expanded, enabling tourists to confidently explore interior destinations such as Kanger Valley National Park and Tirathgarh Waterfalls, making these natural wonders more accessible and enjoyable for all.
Broader Development Scope
Beyond the primary focus on tourism, Chhattisgarh's development plan for Bastar encompasses crucial improvements in education and healthcare infrastructure. The government is committed to enhancing the learning environment for local students by upgrading 45 existing porta cabin schools into permanent structures. This ensures a more stable and conducive atmosphere for education. In parallel, significant progress is planned for the region's healthcare services. The expansion of Primary Health Centres and the construction of transit hostels for doctors are key initiatives aimed at improving accessibility and ensuring the continuity of medical services, especially in remote areas. These advancements are vital for the overall well-being and sustainable development of the Bastar region, addressing fundamental needs alongside the ambitious tourism goals.
Key Projects Unveiled
The upcoming monsoon season is poised to be a landmark period for Bastar, with the Prime Minister expected to visit and inaugurate several key projects. These include the much-anticipated Raoghat–Jagdalpur railway line, which promises to drastically improve connectivity; the expansion of Jagdalpur Airport; the establishment of a Super Speciality Hospital and a Medical College in Dantewada; and the development of 'Education Cities' in Jagargunda and Orchha. These projects represent a significant leap forward in improving infrastructure, healthcare, and educational opportunities for the region. The timing of this development push, following the Centre's deadline to eradicate Left-Wing Extremism (LWE), underscores a strategic effort to bring lasting peace and prosperity to Bastar, a region that has historically faced considerable challenges due to the Maoist insurgency.
