Mass Illness Erupts
A concerning health incident unfolded in Patapur village, situated within the Dasarathapur block of Odisha's Jajpur district, when a significant number
of residents experienced sudden illness. A total of 58 people, a substantial portion of whom were children—specifically 27—had to be admitted to medical facilities. The affliction followed the consumption of a local delicacy known as 'Cuttack Dahibara' purchased from a vendor in the vicinity. Shortly after indulging in the popular snack, affected individuals began presenting with symptoms including fever and vomiting, prompting immediate medical attention. The patients were subsequently transferred to the Dasarathapur Community Health Centre and the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital for assessment and treatment.
Official Response and Investigation
In the wake of the widespread illness, state authorities have mobilized to address the situation and ascertain the root cause. Jajpur District Collector Ambar Kumar Kar provided an update, noting that 21 individuals had already been released from the hospital after receiving necessary care and recovering. The state's Health and Family Welfare Minister, Mukesh Mahaling, personally visited the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital to check on the well-being of those still undergoing treatment. He confirmed that preliminary findings suggest the 'dahibara' consumption was the likely culprit. To this end, crucial steps have been taken, including the collection of food and water samples, which have been dispatched for comprehensive laboratory testing. Furthermore, the state government has established three distinct teams tasked with conducting an in-depth investigation into the entire affair, ensuring that all contributing factors are thoroughly examined and that all patients receive the highest standard of medical attention.
