Rain Brings Relief
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an extended period of improved air quality for Mumbai. The forecast anticipates rainfall over the
next several days, promising relief from the poor air conditions that have plagued the region. This weather pattern marks a welcome change for the city. These showers are expected to continue at least until Saturday, offering a sustained period of improved air quality and clearer skies. The IMD's predictions bring a sense of optimism for residents, especially those affected by the recent pollution levels.
Clear Skies Emerge
A notable occurrence happened after Diwali, with Mumbai waking up to clear skies on Wednesday. This change was a direct result of unseasonal showers that swept through Mumbai and its surrounding areas on Tuesday evening. The rainfall not only cleared the air but also led to a significant decrease in the Air Quality Index (AQI) levels. This shift was particularly noticeable following the Diwali festivities, which extended until Tuesday, contributing to the initial deterioration of the air quality. The improvement in air quality on Wednesday morning was a welcome contrast, demonstrating the positive impact of the rains.
Post-Diwali Cleanliness
Mumbai experienced a rare period of clear skies in the wake of Diwali celebrations. The recent conditions placed the city among the cleanest it has been after Diwali in the past 3 years. This improvement in air quality is a stark contrast to the period immediately following the withdrawal of the monsoon on October 10. Prior to the recent rainfall, Mumbai's air quality was on a downward trajectory. The overall AQI had worsened from a 'satisfactory' level (below 100) to a 'moderate' level (between 100 and 200), underlining the severity of the air pollution during that time.
Rain's Impact Felt
Heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, had a positive effect on air quality across Mumbai, and its neighboring districts of Navi Mumbai and Thane. The significant rainfall helped in settling the pollutants suspended in the air. This acted as a major relief to the smog-laden city. The impact of the rains extended beyond the immediate areas, and contributed to a significant improvement in air quality throughout the region. This improvement provides a healthier environment and a sense of relief for the residents.
