Summer Arrives Early
After a brief respite with cooler weather, Delhi is now facing a sudden and intense heatwave, with many areas recording temperatures above 40°C. This officially
signals the strong onset of summer. The transition has been rapid; what started with a relatively mild early morning low of 26°C on Thursday quickly gave way to daytime heating, erasing the earlier comfort. This unexpected surge in heat suggests a significant deviation from the usual weather patterns for this time of year, catching many residents off guard as they were anticipating a more gradual warming trend.
Rising Temperatures Ahead
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected that maximum temperatures will continue their upward trend, hovering between 39°C and 41°C throughout the upcoming weekend. These figures are considerably higher than the temperatures experienced in the preceding week, which were noted to be below normal due to recent rainfall and the influence of western disturbances. This forecast indicates a sustained period of intense heat, with the dry northwesterly winds expected to persist and no significant western disturbance predicted for the coming days, effectively trapping Delhi under a 'heat dome' and exacerbating the high temperatures.
IMD 5-Day Outlook
The IMD's detailed forecast for Delhi from April 16th to April 20th, 2026, paints a picture of consistently high temperatures. For April 16th, expect mostly cloudy skies with a high of 39°C and a low of 26°C. Moving to April 17th, conditions will be partly cloudy with the high reaching 41°C and a low of 23°C. April 18th anticipates a mostly clear day with late-day cloudiness, a high of 41°C, and a low of 21°C. The pattern continues on April 19th with partly cloudy skies, a high of 41°C, and a low of 22°C. Finally, April 20th is predicted to be mostly clear, with the temperature peaking at 40°C and a low of 21°C, underscoring the sustained high temperatures across the period.
Health Safety Measures
With temperatures soaring to around 40°C (104°F), health experts and the IMD are strongly advising all residents to implement crucial protective measures against heat-related illnesses. It is essential to limit outdoor activities, particularly between noon and 4:00 p.m., when the sun's intensity is at its peak. Staying adequately hydrated is paramount; drink plenty of water and consume electrolyte-rich fluids regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty. Furthermore, utilizing technology can aid in preparedness. Delhi residents are encouraged to use weather applications and services like mParivahan to monitor real-time weather conditions and traffic, allowing for better planning of daily commutes and activities to minimize heat exposure.
