Mira Bhayandar's New Metro
Residents of Mira Bhayandar are set to benefit immensely as Line 9 officially connects them to the city's metro system. This new 4.5 km stretch features
four operational stations: Dahisar, Pandhurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon, all situated along the Western Express Highway. This development provides a much-needed, efficient alternative to the notoriously congested Dahisar checknaaka. Travelers heading to and from Mira Road can now easily link up with Line 7 at Dahisar, which serves the route between Dahisar East and Andheri East. Further interchange options are available, including Line 2A at Dahisar for access to Andheri West and Line 1 at Gundavali. A future connection to Line 6 at JVLR is also part of the development plans. Authorities anticipate robust ridership from the outset, with initial estimates ranging from 50,000 to one lakh daily passengers. The remaining stations on Line 9 are expected to be operational within the next six months, with a planned extension to Line 7A, reaching the international airport by 2027.
Eastern Suburbs Connectivity
The eastern suburbs of Mumbai gain a vital new artery with the opening of five stations on Line 2B, spanning 5.53 km from Diamond Garden in Chembur to Mandale. This addition marks Mumbai's fifth operational metro line. The newly opened stations include Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd, and Mandale. Notably, Mankhurd station offers a direct interchange with the suburban railway network, significantly enhancing transit options. Efforts are underway to integrate with the monorail service via the Chembur station, which will become available once that service resumes. While the current operational stretch is limited, it serves as a crucial starting point. The full potential of Line 2B will be realized upon its completion, which will extend across 23.643 km and feature 20 stations. This comprehensive route will connect Mankhurd and Chembur to key areas like Kurla, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Bandra, Khar, and eventually Andheri West by 2027. Initial ridership for this segment is expected to grow steadily, building towards the projected daily ridership of 8.9 lakh for the entire line.
Broader Metro Vision
Looking ahead, Line 2B is poised to become a pivotal east-west corridor within Mumbai’s expanding metro network. Its completion will facilitate crucial interchanges with Line 3 at BKC, Line 1 at DN Nagar, and connections with the suburban railway and Line 4 at Kurla. The full operationalization of Line 2B is projected to accommodate a daily ridership of 8.9 lakh, escalating to 10.5 lakh by 2031, with an estimated total project cost of Rs 10,986 crore. Similarly, Line 9, along with its extension Line 7A, anticipates substantial ridership. The projected daily usage across the entire Line 9 corridor is expected to reach 11.12 lakh by 2031. The combined project cost for Lines 9 and 7A is estimated at Rs 6,607 crore, underscoring the significant investment in enhancing Mumbai's public transportation infrastructure. These developments represent a major stride towards a more connected and efficient urban mobility experience for Mumbaikars.
