Sleeper Train Approved
A significant advancement in India's rail network has been greenlit by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw: the introduction of a Vande Bharat Sleeper train
service connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai. This initiative aims to elevate the long-distance overnight travel experience, prioritizing passenger comfort and overall journey satisfaction. The South Western Railway (SWR) zone is anticipated to be responsible for the operation and upkeep of this state-of-the-art train. This move underscores a broader push towards modernizing train travel, offering a premium alternative for inter-city transit. The development promises to be a game-changer for frequent travelers on this busy corridor.
Route and Technology
The innovative Vande Bharat Sleeper, distinguished by its striking orange and grey livery, is a product of BEML's engineering prowess, built upon the advanced technology developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. This new service will ply between KSR Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. Notably, this marks the second Vande Bharat Sleeper train to grace the Indian railways; the first was commissioned in January 2026, connecting Howrah and Kamakhya, and significantly slashed travel time between these cities by as much as six hours. The Bengaluru-Mumbai route is poised to benefit similarly from this technological leap.
Official Confirmation
The official go-ahead for this new Vande Bharat Sleeper service was conveyed through a letter dated April 5, 2026, from Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to PC Mohan, the Member of Parliament for Bangalore Central. In his correspondence, the minister expressed pleasure in announcing the approval of the new train service between KSR Bengaluru railway station and CSMT, acknowledging a prior discussion regarding public convenience. This formal confirmation signifies a concrete step towards enhancing connectivity and travel options for the populace on this vital route.
Production Ramp-Up
In tandem with the approval of new routes, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has highlighted a concerted effort to accelerate the production of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains. He previously indicated that the manufacturing capacity has been significantly enhanced, with projections suggesting that 12 such trains are slated for introduction by the end of 2026. This includes six rakes designated for deployment on each side of the operational routes, ensuring a steady rollout of these modern sleeper services across the country. This increased production capacity is crucial for meeting the growing demand and expanding the reach of this advanced rail technology.
