A City Ablaze
Kolkata was enveloped in a festive spirit from the early hours, anticipating a monumental political transition. A vast multitude, comprising citizens from across
West Bengal, various states of India, and even international visitors, converged upon the city to witness Suvendu Adhikari's historic inauguration as the inaugural Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal. The iconic Brigade Parade Ground, long recognized as Bengal's paramount political stage for large-scale rallies, served as the venue for this significant oath-taking ceremony, which was presided over by the Governor. The presence of prominent national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President Nitin Nabin, several Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers from BJP-governed states, underscored the importance of the occasion, transforming the city into a vibrant hub of political fervor and public engagement.
Festive Preparations
The city's thoroughfares were a spectacle of political enthusiasm, adorned with large cutouts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Supporters, proudly waving BJP flags, were a ubiquitous sight, travelling not just on foot but also packed into buses and cars making their way towards the Brigade Parade Ground. This overwhelming display of support and excitement was palpable, despite potential disruptions like road closures. The dedication of attendees was evident, with individuals like Manish Basak, an engineer from Shantiniketan who had relocated to Mumbai, making a special journey back to witness this 'historic day.' His commitment reflected a promise made during the elections – to return for the oath-taking if the BJP secured victory, a promise he proudly fulfilled. The collective energy and unwavering resolve of the attendees to be part of this significant moment were truly remarkable.
Atmosphere and Aspirations
Outside the main venue, the air buzzed with a unique blend of political fervor and local flavor. Vendors offered popular Bengali street food like 'jhaal muri' and 'rosogolla,' alongside special 'sandesh' imprinted with the lotus symbol, adding a distinct culinary dimension to the celebrations. The atmosphere was electric, punctuated by fervent chants of 'Jai Shri Ram' that reverberated through the immense crowd. Saffron-colored 'abir' (colored powder) filled the air, as many participants danced with unbridled joy. The significance of the venue, Brigade Parade Ground, was not lost on the attendees. Anirban Mukherjee, who drove approximately 290 kilometers from Purulia, expressed his excitement, noting that an oath-taking ceremony of this magnitude had never before graced the historic ground, making it a doubly memorable occasion. The shared sentiment was one of witnessing and participating in a moment destined for the history books.
Diverse Participants
The diverse spectrum of attendees added to the unique tapestry of the event. Some individuals embraced the festive spirit by dressing as Lord Hanuman, while others prominently displayed the Tricolor flag and wore masks of Prime Minister Modi. This visual representation highlighted the broad appeal and varied expressions of support for the new political establishment. Romita Banerjee, who had traveled from Jaipur, shared her personal journey and aspirations, having previously lived in Kolkata before relocating for work. Her presence underscored the hopes many have for the new government, particularly concerning job creation and the potential for her to return to her home state. The timing of the event also coincided with Rabindra Jayanti, the birthday of the revered poet Rabindranath Tagore. Many attendees, dressed in traditional dhotis, acknowledged this auspicious confluence, although some also voiced a pragmatic sentiment, looking forward to seeing if the government could translate its promises into tangible actions, all while celebrating a day of cultural significance.
