Scheme Overview
The Maharashtra government is introducing the Swayampurna Maharashtra Residential Roof Top (SMART) solar scheme to encourage residents to adopt solar energy.
This initiative aims to lower electricity costs and promote the use of renewable energy sources. The scheme has a budget of Rs 330 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26 and Rs 325 crore for 2026-27. This project will be managed by MSEDCL and funded through state government grants. The scheme's primary goal is to provide affordable access to solar power for economically weaker sections of society, including those below the poverty line (BPL), Scheduled Caste (SC), and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories. With the installation of 1KW rooftop solar energy system, the maintenance and repairs for five years will be taken care of by the suppliers. The government also plans to implement the scheme in remote regions like Melghat, Nandurbar, and Gadchiroli, ensuring widespread accessibility and benefits.
Subsidy Breakdown
The subsidy structure varies based on the consumer's economic status and electricity consumption. For individuals with monthly consumption below 100 units, the subsidy amount is significant. Specifically, BPL, SC, and ST consumers receive a subsidy of 90-95% of the installation cost. This means that for a 1KW solar panel setup, which costs approximately Rs 50,000 and generates around 120 units per month, the Centre will provide Rs 30,000, and the state will offer a subsidy of Rs 17,500. The consumer’s contribution is just Rs 2,500. For consumers who don't fall into BPL, SC, or ST categories but consume less than 100 units monthly, the subsidy is Rs 40,000. They pay Rs 10,000. The government's approach ensures that those with limited financial resources benefit the most, making solar energy accessible to a broader population. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions and supporting vulnerable communities.
Consumer Benefits
The SMART solar scheme provides multiple advantages to consumers. One of the most significant benefits is a substantial reduction in electricity bills. The aim is to provide 'zero' monthly electricity bills for those who qualify. Households can also generate extra income by selling surplus solar energy back to the grid after meeting their domestic needs. An estimated 5 lakh domestic consumers will immediately benefit from the scheme, including approximately 1.5 lakh BPL families and about 3.5 lakh households that consume less than 100 units of electricity. This initiative not only lowers energy costs but also empowers individuals to contribute to a greener environment while potentially boosting their income. The government hopes to reduce the financial burden on low-income families and encourage the adoption of clean energy practices.
