Kolkata Airport Incident
An unfortunate event unfolded at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata when a catering truck, operated by a third party, veered
unexpectedly. The vehicle, while on the apron, began to move forward as it was being prepared for service, resulting in a collision with a stationary IndiGo aircraft. The point of impact was the engine of the parked plane. Fortunately, the incident did not lead to any injuries, and the damage sustained by the aircraft has been classified as minor. Aviation authorities have been promptly informed about the occurrence and the relevant investigations have been initiated to ascertain the precise cause of the vehicle's unintended movement.
Aircraft Inspection and Flight Impact
Following the collision, the affected IndiGo aircraft has been taken out of service and is currently undergoing comprehensive inspections and necessary maintenance procedures. This grounding is crucial to ensure the aircraft's airworthiness and safety before it can resume its scheduled operations. The airline is cooperating fully with the investigating authorities to understand the circumstances that led to the incident. As a direct consequence of the aircraft being unavailable, flight 6E 6663, originally scheduled to travel from Kolkata to Guwahati, has been rescheduled. Passengers on this flight have been accommodated on an alternate aircraft to minimize disruption to their travel plans. The airline has emphasized its commitment to a thorough investigation and collaborative efforts with officials.
Context of Aviation Mishaps
This recent incident at Kolkata Airport is not an isolated event within the Indian aviation landscape. A similar occurrence took place in February of this year, when the wingtips of two IndiGo flights, specifically 6E 791, and an Air India flight, AI 2732, made contact while taxiing at Mumbai Airport. In that instance, all passengers were reported safe. Another incident transpired in August of the previous year, where the tail of an IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft scraped the runway in Mumbai. This happened during a go-around maneuver at a low altitude, attributed to adverse weather conditions. While these events have raised concerns, it is noteworthy that no significant injuries or major accidents have been reported in these cases.
