Riverfront Adventure Zones
The BJP-led Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is charting an exciting course for the city's riverfront, particularly along the Mula and Mutha rivers. Building
on the existing Riverfront Development (RFD) project, which spans 44 km with 17.80 km already in progress, the plan for 2026-27 includes the immediate development of a 4.10 km stretch from Rajaram bridge to Warje. This section will be transformed into a dynamic 'riverfront experience park' designed to captivate residents and visitors alike. Imagine soaring on a Sky Wheel, being mesmerized by multimedia river shows, and immersing yourselves in vibrant cultural festivals. For the thrill-seekers, dedicated adventure zones are slated to feature activities like ziplines, kayaking, skywalks, and climbing walls. These additions are envisioned not only to inject a dose of adrenaline into the city but also to serve as a catalyst for tourism and employment generation, breathing new life into the urban landscape along the waterways.
Lake City Vision
Beyond the riverbanks, Pune is poised to earn the moniker of a 'Lake City' through a comprehensive beautification initiative focused on its various lakes. The plan outlines a two-phase approach to revitalize these crucial water bodies. In the initial phase, attention will be directed towards enhancing the aesthetics and ecological health of lakes in Pashan, Model Colony, and Jambhulwadi. Subsequently, the second phase will see similar beautification efforts extended to lakes at Mangdewadi, Katraj, Dhayari, and Lohegaon. These projects are not merely about visual enhancement; they represent a commitment to preserving natural resources and creating serene, accessible public spaces for relaxation and community engagement, thereby enriching the city's natural heritage and offering tranquil escapes.
Zoological and Botanical Enhancements
The well-known Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Katraj is slated for a significant upgrade, aiming to expand its diverse animal collection to an impressive 150 species. This expansion will introduce exotic and fascinating creatures such as zebras, giraffes, African cheetahs, anacondas, tamarins, and baboons, significantly enhancing the educational and recreational value of the park. Furthermore, plans are in motion for the redevelopment of the snake park and the construction of a new bird park within the Katraj complex. Complementing these zoological advancements, Pune will also welcome a 'Miracle Garden' adorned with stunning, attractive flowers, and a botanical garden set to bloom in the open spaces of Sambhaji Garden. These initiatives collectively aim to create a richer biodiversity experience and more beautiful green spaces for citizens.
Environmental Stewardship Initiatives
A strong emphasis on environmental well-being underpins Pune's development plans. The PMC is committed to fostering a healthier ecosystem through several key projects. A dedicated river conservation festival, along with conferences and public awareness campaigns, will highlight the critical importance of maintaining healthy rivers. Simultaneously, significant efforts will be directed towards improving the city's groundwater levels through ambitious afforestation drives. This involves extensive tree plantation projects on the city's hills, with a target of planting 50 lakh trees within a year. Additionally, an innovative, round-the-clock pollution control system is planned for various city sectors. This system will employ electronic waves to monitor air quality and actively mitigate pollution, aiming for a tangible improvement in the city's Air Quality Index and ensuring a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment for all residents.
