Enhanced Rail Connectivity
Indian Railways is embarking on a significant upgrade for the Mumbai-Bengaluru corridor, with plans to introduce two novel train services. Central to this
development is the forthcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, a project spearheaded by the Ministry of Railways to substantially improve the travel experience between these two major metropolises. This initiative is not just about adding more trains; it represents a strategic move to transform overnight rail travel, offering passengers a more comfortable and efficient way to journey between the financial capital and the tech hub. The introduction of these new services is poised to significantly boost connectivity, making inter-city travel more accessible and appealing for a growing number of commuters and travelers.
Introducing Vande Bharat Sleeper
The forthcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper train, a product of BEML's engineering prowess utilizing technology from the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, is set to grace the Mumbai-Bengaluru route. This modern train, easily identifiable by its distinctive orange and grey livery, will operate between KSR Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. This will mark the second instance of this premium sleeper service in the country, following the successful launch of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper between Howrah and Kamakhya earlier in January 2026. The initial service has already demonstrated its efficiency by remarkably reducing travel duration by up to six hours on its route, setting a high benchmark for future operations and passenger expectations.
Production and Expansion Plans
The production capacity for the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains is being significantly ramped up, as announced by the Union Minister. The ambitious plan aims to see twelve of these advanced sleeper trains rolled out by the end of 2026. This expansion involves the deployment of six rakes on each side of the operational routes, ensuring widespread availability and service. This substantial increase in production underscores the government's commitment to modernizing the railway network and catering to the growing demand for premium overnight rail travel across various key corridors of the nation, promising a significant leap in passenger comfort and convenience.
Performance of Current Services
The existing Vande Bharat Sleeper Express service, currently operating between Howrah and Kamakhya, has showcased exceptional performance and popularity since its inception in January 2026. Official figures from the Ministry of Railways indicate an overwhelming demand, with the train consistently running at over 100 percent occupancy. In its initial three months of operation, this service successfully transported 1.21 lakh passengers across 119 trips. This remarkable achievement not only highlights the strong passenger confidence in the premium overnight rail travel experience but also demonstrates the substantial demand for such modern, efficient, and comfortable train services on key Indian routes.
