Widespread Food Fraud
Hyderabad, a city renowned for its culinary delights, is currently facing a harsh reality check regarding the safety of its food supply. A rigorous enforcement
drive by the Hyderabad Police's H-FAST (Hyderabad Food Adulteration Surveillance Teams) has brought to light an extensive network of food adulteration activities across numerous establishments. Over the past month alone, this initiative has resulted in the registration of 61 criminal cases, the confiscation of a staggering 15 tonnes of compromised food products, and the apprehension of 64 individuals involved in these illicit operations. Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has unequivocally stated that these actions constitute a 'silent, deadly attack on every household,' highlighting the pervasive nature of the problem, which extends from everyday items like ginger-garlic paste and milk to beloved treats such as Osmania biscuits and ice creams. The sheer scale and audacity with which these adulterators operate have left both officials and residents deeply concerned, underscoring a critical need for vigilance and stringent regulatory action.
Shocking Product Deceptions
Recent investigations have unearthed a disturbing array of adulterated and unhygienic food preparation methods. In Rajendranagar, teams discovered ginger-garlic paste being manufactured using spoiled ingredients, supplemented with acetic acid and synthetic food coloring, all stored in unsanitary conditions within open drums exposed to pests. Similarly, illegal bakeries in Mailardevpally and Gudimalkapur were found producing the city's iconic Osmania biscuits with substandard components under equally unhygienic circumstances. Further inspections revealed frozen chicken wings past their prime being stored improperly in Bharath Nagar. An ice-cream production unit in Musheerabad was flagged for using expired flavorings and inferior synthetic dyes. Disturbingly, a cake and bun manufacturing unit in Katedan was found utilizing rotten eggs along with hazardous chemicals like sodium benzoate, sorbic acid, and PGPR liquid. Even a unit in Begum Bazar was caught repackaging low-quality coconut powder, falsely marketing it as a premium branded product. These adulterated goods were systematically distributed to catering services, hotels, and other commercial buyers in large volumes.
Dairy and Spice Dangers
The crackdown has also exposed grave issues within the dairy and spice sectors, impacting essential food items. Officials cataloged a significant number of incidents involving fake ginger-garlic paste, adulterated paneer, kova, and ghee. Spoiled milk and curd products, posing serious health risks, were also frequently encountered. The adulteration extended to staple spices, with turmeric, chili powder, and mustard found to be mixed with harmful or inferior substances. In one particularly alarming seizure at a dairy products shop, authorities confiscated 3,000 kilograms of counterfeit paneer, along with adulterated kova and ghee, and palm oil. Investigations into an illicit production facility revealed pickles being manufactured from spoiled and rotten vegetables, presenting a clear and present danger to consumers. The scope of deception is broad, encompassing not only food items but also the alarming discovery of fake detergent powder and mosquito repellent being packaged and sold under legitimate brand names, indicating a brazen disregard for consumer safety across multiple product categories.
Enforcement and Public Vigilance
The Hyderabad Police are demonstrating a firm commitment to eradicating food adulteration, emphasizing a policy of 'zero tolerance' for those who jeopardize public health for financial gain. The H-FAST initiative, launched this month, operates under the direct supervision of Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar and is staffed by 28 dedicated personnel, including inspectors and sub-inspectors. Their mandate is clear: to conduct surprise raids, identify unsafe food practices, and ensure the prosecution of offenders. This dedicated team focuses on surveillance, detection, and legal action against violations. To empower citizens and encourage community participation in ensuring food safety, a dedicated toll-free number, 8712661212, has been established. This platform allows the public to report any instances of suspected food adulteration or unsafe food handling practices, thereby fostering a collaborative approach to building a healthier and more trustworthy food environment for everyone in the city. The authorities have pledged to intensify these efforts, reinforcing their dedication to protecting innocent lives.
