Child Crime Statistics
Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of cases related to crimes against children across India, with 24,171 FIRs lodged in 2024. This figure places
the state ahead of Uttar Pradesh, which reported 22,222 such cases. On a city level, Mumbai stands second nationally for crimes against minors, registering 3,374 cases. This places Mumbai just behind Delhi, which reported a significantly higher 7,662 cases. The data underscores a pressing concern regarding the safety and welfare of children within the state and its primary urban center.
Crimes Against Women
In the realm of crimes against women, Mumbai has emerged as the second metropolitan city with the most First Information Reports (FIRs) filed, tallying 6,358 cases in 2024. This statistic places Mumbai behind only Delhi, which recorded a substantial 13,396 cases. Other major urban centers within Maharashtra also reported notable numbers, with Pune logging 2,631 cases and Nagpur registering 1,513. When examining states, Maharashtra ranks second in the nation for offences against women, with a total of 47,954 cases, while Uttar Pradesh leads the list with 66,398 registered incidents. However, it's important to note that Telangana exhibited the highest crime rate concerning women, calculated at 128.6 percent relative to its population.
Economic Offences Surge
Maharashtra, particularly its economic hub Mumbai, is at the forefront of registered economic offences. Mumbai alone registered 7,771 cases in 2024, a figure higher than any other metropolitan area nationwide. These offences predominantly encompass criminal breach of trust, forgery, cheating, and fraud. Across the entire state, Maharashtra has secured a position among the top three states for economic offences, accumulating 20,083 cases. This places it behind Telangana (39,127 cases) and Rajasthan (27,637 cases), indicating a widespread issue of financial crimes affecting the state.
Corruption and Cybercrimes
Maharashtra leads the nation in the registration of cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act, with the Anti Corruption Bureau filing 721 cases in 2024. Tamil Nadu is a distant second with 364 cases. A significant portion of Maharashtra's corruption cases, 683, were 'trap cases' where officials were apprehended accepting bribes. Regarding cyber crimes, Maharashtra ranks fourth among states, with 9,922 cases registered. Bengaluru leads all cities in cybercrime reporting with 17,561 cases, followed by Mumbai which recorded 4,939 instances.
Senior Citizen Safety
Crimes against senior citizens continue to be a significant concern in Maharashtra, with the state recording 4,918 cases in 2024. This figure makes Maharashtra the second-highest state in this category, trailing only Madhya Pradesh, which reported 5,875 cases. In metropolitan areas, Mumbai also ranks second after Delhi in cases involving offences against the elderly. Mumbai registered 791 such cases, while Delhi reported 1,267 cases. This data highlights the vulnerability of the elderly population within the state and its major cities.
Custodial Deaths
In the unfortunate category of deaths occurring in police custody, Maharashtra reported 10 such cases in 2024, positioning it as the second state with the highest number of incidents. Gujarat recorded the highest number of custodial deaths with 17 cases. While the NCRB report does not provide detailed context for these specific instances, the numbers indicate a need for continued scrutiny and reform within law enforcement procedures across states.
