Addressing Bottlenecks
For years, the ghat section between Mumbai and Pune on the expressway was a notorious bottleneck, plagued by frequent accidents, vehicle breakdowns on steep
inclines, and extensive traffic jams, particularly during peak travel times. The existing six-lane stretch between the Adoshi Tunnel and Khandala Exit struggled to accommodate the full ten-lane traffic, leading to kilometres-long queues and hazardous conditions. Landslides during monsoons often necessitated lane closures, exacerbating congestion. This persistent problem underscored the urgent need for a significant infrastructure upgrade to ensure a smoother and more dependable commute for the millions who travel this vital corridor.
The Missing Link Solution
The 'Missing Link' project was conceived to create a completely new alignment, diverting traffic away from the problematic ghat section. This ambitious undertaking connects Khopoli Exit to Kusgaon, effectively bypassing the treacherous curves and steep gradients. The new route shortens the distance from 19 kilometres to 13.3 kilometres, promising a time saving of 20 to 25 minutes for travellers. With cars and buses comprising approximately 70% of the traffic and heavy vehicles the remaining 30%, this new alignment is crucial for easing the strain on the older, more hazardous ghat segment. The project, initiated with approval on August 29, 2018, and costing Rs 6,695.37 crore, was inaugurated on Maharashtra Day, May 1.
Engineering Marvels Unveiled
Spanning 19.84 kilometres, the new alignment boasts eight lanes (four in each direction) with a substantial 100-meter width and a design speed limit of 120 km per hour. Its infrastructure includes four major bridges, one minor bridge, and two impressive viaducts. A key feature is the pair of parallel tunnels, one 1.64 kilometres long and the other a colossal 8.92 kilometres, positioning it as one of Asia's longest road tunnels, potentially setting a Guinness World Record. Complementing these are two remarkable bridges: a 900-meter viaduct soaring 60 meters above the valley and a 650-meter cable-stayed bridge featuring a 184-meter pylon over Tiger Valley, showcasing advanced engineering and design.
Transformative Travel Impact
The successful completion of the Missing Link project heralds a new era of travel between Mumbai and Pune. By completely bypassing the perilous ghat curves, the journey time is expected to be slashed by nearly half an hour. This will lead to significantly smoother traffic flow and the elimination of current congestion issues. The economic benefits are also substantial, with an estimated daily saving of Rs 1 crore in fuel costs anticipated due to reduced idling and more efficient travel. The project's focus on enhanced safety, reduced accident rates, and faster transit between Mumbai, Lonavala, and Pune solidifies its status as a landmark, technologically advanced highway development in Maharashtra.
