New Sleeper Service
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced the imminent launch of a Vande Bharat Sleeper train service that will operate between Bengaluru and Mumbai.
This initiative is poised to dramatically improve rail connectivity between these two major metropolitan areas. The introduction of this new train aims to cater to the growing demand for enhanced long-distance overnight travel, focusing on elevating passenger comfort and the overall quality of the journey. This service is expected to address long-standing connectivity needs for travellers between South and North Karnataka, as well as those travelling to and from Pune. The train is designed to provide a superior travel experience, making overnight journeys more pleasant and efficient.
Technological Advancement
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train, a product of collaboration between BEML and the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, will feature a distinctive orange and grey livery. This new service will connect KSR Bengaluru directly with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. This particular train will be the second of its kind to be introduced in the nation. The inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper service commenced operations in January 2026, linking Howrah and Kamakhya, and has already demonstrated its efficiency by reducing travel time between these two cities by as much as six hours, setting a precedent for improved rail travel.
Karnataka's Rail Network
Karnataka is currently well-served by Vande Bharat trains, with 12 pairs of services operating across 14 districts. The railway network in the state is continuously expanding and improving. Testing is presently underway for a Vande Bharat service on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route, which is anticipated to bolster coastal connectivity significantly, extending all the way to Madgaon. Since 2014, Karnataka has seen the construction of approximately 1,750 kilometers of new railway lines. Furthermore, the intricate electrification work on the Hassan-Mangaluru section has been successfully completed, with ongoing testing to ensure its full operational readiness.
Future Infrastructure
To support the expanding Vande Bharat fleet and ensure seamless operations, the national transporter has ambitious plans for dedicated maintenance facilities. A significant investment of Rs 270 crore is earmarked for the establishment of a Vande Bharat Sleeper maintenance depot. In addition to this, a separate chair car maintenance facility is planned at SMVT Bengaluru, with an estimated cost of Rs 52.73 crore. These infrastructural developments are crucial for the long-term success and efficient upkeep of these advanced train sets, promising enhanced reliability and service quality for passengers.
