Collision and Confrontation
A routine drive turned chaotic in Bengaluru on Friday night when a cab, driven by 47-year-old Ahmed Gurkar, was involved in a collision with a two-wheeler
carrying two young women. The impact sent the riders tumbling onto the road, also causing damage to the rear left side of the cab. Mr. Gurkar, demonstrating a sense of civic duty, assisted the fallen riders. However, his attempt to discuss the vehicle damage and seek compensation was met with aggressive and offensive language. The situation rapidly deteriorated from a minor accident to a heated dispute, as the two women, identified as 19-year-old Liza from Bannerghatta Road and 18-year-old Amran Mathew from Koramangala, both students, allegedly turned their anger towards the driver.
Escalation and Arrest
The confrontation escalated dramatically as the intoxicated students allegedly resorted to physical violence, using their helmets to strike the cab driver. Their aggressive behaviour extended to bystanders who attempted to de-escalate the situation, further fueling the commotion. The alarming scene prompted a passerby to alert the authorities via the 112 helpline. Responding swiftly, police officers from Hulimavu station arrived at the location. The unruly students reportedly resisted attempts to be placed into a police vehicle, necessitating a brief struggle before they were transported to the Hulimavu police station. Their parents were subsequently summoned to the station.
Legal Ramifications
Following the incident and their apprehension, a formal case was registered against the two students. However, despite the serious nature of the alleged assault, the police have stated that the girls were released in the early hours of Saturday, around 3 am. This release occurred after their parents were present and they were served with official notices. A police officer confirmed the registration of the case, indicating that while legal action was initiated, the immediate custody of the individuals concluded with their parents' involvement and a formal warning.
