A significant safety concern arose at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on a recent Tuesday afternoon. Two suburban local trains were inadvertently
directed onto the identical track, a situation that temporarily halted operations on the Central Railway's suburban network. The incident unfolded when a train arriving from Badlapur was erroneously instructed to proceed to Platform 5, while Platform 4 was already occupied by another local train. This operational error placed both trains on the same railway line, sparking immediate worries about safety protocols, particularly during the bustling peak hours. Fortunately, railway officials confirmed that multiple layers of safety mechanisms were functional and successfully prevented any collision. A senior Central Railway official stated that a signal was in place between the two trains, and the internal home signal for the suburban section at CSMT was displaying red. The motorman of the approaching train responsibly adhered to this signal, bringing the train to a complete stop with ample time to spare, thus averting a potential disaster.
Safety Systems Prevail
Railway authorities emphasized that the separation between the two trains was maintained at a safe distance exceeding 120 meters, ensuring there was no immediate peril to passengers. The official further elaborated that the situation posed no risk of collision, as the integrated signaling system and the prompt reaction of the train crew effectively maintained a secure space between the two train sets. In response to this potentially hazardous situation, train movements on platforms 5 through 8 were temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure, commencing around 3:18 pm. This swift action underscored the seriousness with which the railway administration treated the incident. The spokesperson for Central Railway officially confirmed that an in-depth inquiry has been initiated to pinpoint the exact cause behind the erroneous routing. As a consequence of the incident, the station master responsible for the control cabin has been suspended pending the outcome of this investigation.
