Mira Bhayandar Connectivity Boost
Residents of Mira Bhayandar are set to experience their first-ever Metro service with the inauguration of Line 9. This 4.5 km stretch, featuring four stations—Dahisar,
Pandhurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon—will significantly ease travel along the Western Express Highway. This development offers a much-needed alternative to the heavily congested Dahisar checknaka. Beyond providing direct access, Line 9 seamlessly integrates with existing Metro infrastructure. Commuters heading towards Andheri East can easily switch to Line 7 at Dahisar East. For those bound for Andheri West, an interchange at Dahisar is available for Line 2A. Furthermore, Gundavali station provides a connection to Line 1, and a future link to Line 6 at JVLR is also on the horizon. Authorities anticipate a substantial ridership of 50,000 to one lakh passengers daily from the outset. The remaining four stations on Line 9 are slated to open within the next six months, with an ultimate extension to Line 7A, connecting to the international airport, expected by 2027. The overall project cost for Lines 9 and 7A combined is Rs 6,607 crore, with projected daily ridership of 11.12 lakh by 2031.
Eastern Suburbs Welcome Metro
The eastern suburbs of Mumbai are also gaining improved connectivity with the launch of five stations on Line 2B. This 5.53 km segment runs from Diamond Garden in Chembur to Mandale, marking Mumbai's fifth operational Metro line. The newly opened stations include Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd, and Mandale. Notably, Mankhurd station offers a direct interchange with the suburban railway network, a crucial link for many commuters. While the Chembur station's connection to the monorail awaits the service's resumption, its eventual integration will further enhance multimodal transport options. Initially, the ridership for this limited stretch is expected to grow steadily. However, the full potential of Line 2B will be realized upon its completion. The entire 23.643 km line, encompassing 20 stations, is planned to connect Mankhurd, Chembur, Kurla, BKC, Bandra, Khar, and ultimately Andheri West, with this comprehensive development anticipated by 2027. The total investment for Line 2B is Rs 10,986 crore, and it's projected to serve 8.9 lakh passengers daily, increasing to 10.5 lakh by 2031. Upon completion, Line 2B will serve as a vital east-west artery, with interchanges at BKC for Line 3, DN Nagar for Line 1, and Kurla for both the suburban railway and Line 4.
Future Transit Projects
Beyond the immediate Metro line inaugurations, Mumbai's urban transportation landscape is poised for further transformation with the commencement of other significant infrastructure projects. Tuesday also marked the official start of tunnelling operations for the ambitious Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel project. This development promises to alleviate traffic congestion on a crucial arterial route. Additionally, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the innovative pod taxi project at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). This initiative signifies a move towards exploring advanced, personalized transit solutions within key business and commercial hubs. While the details and timelines for these projects are still unfolding, their initiation underscores Mumbai's commitment to expanding its transit network and embracing future-forward mobility solutions, aiming to create a more integrated and efficient urban transportation ecosystem for its residents.
