Dream Takes Flight
Leela Jose, a resident of Konnathady, Idukki, had always harbored a dream of skydiving, a desire that took root during her childhood as she watched aeroplanes
soaring high above her hometown. She often mused about the thrill of experiencing such heights, casually sharing her thoughts with friends. That dream finally became a reality during a visit to Dubai, where her son, P. Anish, a civil engineer, resides. Initially, Anish was taken aback by her wish to skydive, unsure if she was serious. However, Leela's unwavering resolve convinced him to support her audacious goal. With her son’s backing, she embraced the opportunity to finally make her long-held aspiration come true, proving that age is indeed no barrier when it comes to chasing one's dreams. Her adventure became a testament to the enduring spirit of adventure and a source of inspiration for many.
Tandem Skydiving Experience
The chosen method for Leela's skydiving experience was a tandem jump, a beginner-friendly approach where a participant is securely fastened to a certified instructor, sharing a single parachute system. The preparation and execution of this thrilling adventure involved significant logistical and financial support from her son, Anish, who spent nearly Rs 2 lakh to cover the flight, instructor fees, and videography. The experience itself was described by Leela as an unforgettable mix of excitement, fear, and pure joy. She vividly recalled a moment of weightlessness, where all thoughts seemed to vanish, followed by the serene opening of the parachute at 6,000 feet, assuring a safe landing. This tandem jump allowed her to bypass the need for extensive training, making the dream of freefalling from a high altitude accessible and safe for her. It was not just about the jump but also about embracing the freedom and exhilaration of the moment.

Upon returning home to Idukki, Leela eagerly shared photos and videos of her skydiving adventure with her friends, who initially expressed shock but soon showered her with admiration and praise for her determination. This experience not only fulfilled a personal dream but also sent a strong message to her community and beyond, demonstrating that age should not be a deterrent to pursuing one's passions. Her accomplishment is a testament to the spirit of adventure, encouraging people of all generations to chase their aspirations. This inspiring story echoed the sentiments of Dr Shraddha Chauhan, an 80-year-old woman who, in July, completed a tandem skydive, further proving that age is not a barrier to achieving extraordinary feats. Leela’s accomplishment also highlights her optimistic outlook on life, as she has expressed a desire to explore further adventures, specifically expressing a wish to experience space travel, if possible. She credits her late father, Maanikutty, an Indian Army officer, for instilling in her the courage to attempt the seemingly impossible.
