Encroachments Targeted
In a significant enforcement operation, the Municipal Corporation, with backing from district police, began demolishing structures identified as illegal
encroachments situated near the old High Court building and the civil court complex in Lucknow’s Qaiserbagh area. Officials stated that this action was mandated by an order from the Allahabad High Court, aimed at clearing unauthorised constructions that had proliferated on and around the court premises. The drive commenced early in the day, with teams meticulously executing the demolition of lawyers' chambers that authorities deemed to be on illegally occupied land. This move was part of a broader strategy to reclaim public spaces and ensure adherence to legal building regulations within the vicinity of judicial establishments, highlighting a determined effort to address long-standing issues of land encroachment in the city.
Protests Erupt
The news of the demolition spread rapidly, drawing a large congregation of lawyers to the site who vehemently opposed the authorities' actions. A heated exchange ensued between the protesting lawyers and the civic officials, with legal professionals arguing against the removal of their chambers. The situation quickly deteriorated into a tense standoff as tempers flared. Amidst the escalating chaos and vocal objections, the police were compelled to intervene, employing mild force to disperse the agitated crowd and restore order. This sudden unrest caused significant concern in the surrounding areas, prompting local vendors and shopkeepers to quickly close their businesses and evacuate the vicinity, fearing further escalation of the conflict and potential disruption.
Demolition Halted
Recognizing the intensity of the lawyers' protest and the rapidly deteriorating situation, authorities made the decision to temporarily suspend the demolition drive for the remainder of the day. The suspension was a strategic move to de-escalate the conflict and prevent further worsening of the unrest. Officials confirmed that the operation was put on hold following the strong objections raised by the legal fraternity. To address the concerns and find a resolution, it was announced that a meeting would be convened with the lawyers. This planned discussion aims to thoroughly review the matter, understand the grievances, and collaboratively determine the appropriate next steps and future course of action regarding the disputed structures and land.
Official Statements
Kamlesh Kumar Dixit, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Lucknow, confirmed that the day's operation successfully resulted in the removal of several illegal constructions as part of a coordinated enforcement effort. He emphasized that the entire demolition drive was executed strictly in accordance with the directives issued by the Allahabad High Court concerning the removal of encroachments. Regarding the protest and the subsequent police action, DCP Dixit stated that no First Information Report (FIR) had been lodged in connection with the lawyers' demonstration up to that point. He also clarified that, despite the clash and the use of mild force, no individuals had officially come forward to report any injuries sustained during the unrest. Police continued to maintain a vigilant watch over the area, with officials reiterating their commitment to future actions being carried out within the bounds of legal guidelines.
