Unexpected Diversion to Lucknow
An Air India Express flight, identified by its flight number IX1523 and operated on an Airbus A320 aircraft, was en route from Bagdogra (Siliguri) to Delhi
when an alarming situation developed. During the flight, the crew detected smoke originating from the avionics bay, the crucial section housing the aircraft's electronic systems. This discovery triggered an immediate response from the flight captain, who issued a "Mayday" call, the universally recognized distress signal indicating a life-threatening emergency. Consequently, air traffic control in Lucknow was notified, and the flight was promptly diverted to Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow. The aircraft successfully landed at approximately 5:18 PM on Monday evening, averting a potentially dangerous scenario.
Safe Evacuation and Grounding
Upon its safe arrival in Lucknow, the priority was the well-being of everyone on board. The flight carried a total of 148 individuals, comprising 142 passengers and six crew members. All passengers and crew were evacuated from the aircraft without any reported injuries. Following the emergency landing and evacuation, the aircraft was officially classified as "Aircraft on Ground" (AOG). This designation signifies a technical fault that necessitates immediate inspection and repair before the aircraft can resume flying operations. Passengers who were aboard the diverted flight were subsequently assisted by the airline, with arrangements made for them to reach their original destination. This included accommodation in hotels for some and rebooking on subsequent flights, while others were offered full refunds for their disrupted travel plans.
