Viral Video Spark
The unsettling journey on the Vande Bharat Express from Patna to Tatanagar took a grim turn when a passenger documented a disturbing food quality issue.
This passenger shared a video on a popular social media platform, clearly showing insects present within a sealed cup of yogurt. The clip rapidly gained traction, amplifying concerns about the hygiene standards maintained during meal service on one of India's premier train services. The video didn't just depict a solitary instance; subsequent reports emerged from other passengers on the same train who corroborated similar findings, indicating a broader problem with the food served. This widespread discontent led to immediate attention from the authorities, prompting a swift investigation and decisive action to address the critical lapse in food safety and quality.
Swift Action Taken
In the wake of the viral video and ensuing passenger complaints, railway authorities wasted no time in implementing corrective measures. The primary food service provider aboard the Vande Bharat train faced severe repercussions, with their contract being immediately terminated. This drastic step underscores the seriousness with which the Ministry of Railways views breaches in food safety protocols. Beyond contract termination, the caterer was also levied a significant financial penalty of Rs 50 Lakh. Furthermore, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) itself was not spared, facing a fine of Rs 10 Lakh for its role in overseeing the catering services. The Ministry of Railways publicly acknowledged the complaint, assuring that the matter was being treated with utmost gravity and that appropriate penalties were imposed.
Passenger Experience
The passenger who initially shared the distressing video detailed their experience in great detail. The footage prominently featured a cup of yogurt, clearly displaying live insects swimming within. The passenger demonstrated that a second cup, intended for another traveler, also presented the same alarming contamination. It was noted that the other passenger had consumed a portion of their meal before discovering the issue, raising further concerns about the potential health risks involved. The passenger also recounted attempts to escalate the complaint to the train staff, requesting to speak with a manager or supervisor to address the situation. However, they expressed dissatisfaction with the response, stating that no immediate or effective action was taken by the on-board personnel to rectify the problem or offer a satisfactory resolution at the time of the incident.
Commitment to Safety
An official spokesperson for Indian Railways emphasized the unwavering commitment to passenger safety and the quality of services provided, particularly on premium trains like the Vande Bharat Express. The spokesperson affirmed that the railway administration adheres to stringent standards and protocols designed to ensure the highest levels of hygiene and food quality. They reiterated that such incidents are not taken lightly and that robust mechanisms are in place to monitor and maintain these standards consistently. The spokesperson highlighted that passengers opting for services like the Vande Bharat expect a superior travel experience, and the railway is dedicated to meeting and exceeding these expectations through rigorous oversight and prompt action against any service failures.
