Hidden Dangers Uncovered
Reports have emerged concerning a beverage, often found in juice stores near educational establishments in Bengaluru, that is deceptively marketed. This
drink, identified by its distinctive ball-shaped packaging, has been brought to the attention of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR). Initial observations suggest that this product, which bears a striking resemblance to fruit juices, contains a substantial alcohol content. The KSCPCR has initiated an investigation into these claims, seeking to understand the precise nature of the beverage and its potential impact on the community, particularly on minors who might unknowingly consume it. The focus is on ensuring that products accessible to children do not pose unforeseen health risks.
Youngsters Fall Ill
During recent Holi festivities, a concerning incident unfolded on Begur Road in Bengaluru, where children as young as 11 years old were observed experiencing severe drowsiness after consuming this particular drink. A concerned resident, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their distress upon witnessing young children partake in the beverage. Initially unaware of its composition, the resident noted the children's disoriented state. Upon further investigation and online research, it was discovered that the drink contained alcohol. This discovery led to immediate concern about the accessibility and promotion of such products to a vulnerable age group, highlighting a significant public health issue that requires urgent attention from regulatory bodies.
Regulatory Action Initiated
In response to these alarming reports, Shashidhar S Kosumbe, the Chairman of the KSCPCR, formally communicated with the Karnataka State Drugs Control Department on March 4th. The Commission has requested a comprehensive report detailing the alcohol content of the beverage in question. The KSCPCR has expressed profound concern that this drink, which mimics the appearance of juice, contains approximately 15 percent alcohol and is gaining traction among younger demographics due to its appealing presentation and potentially high sugar levels. The department has been urged to conduct thorough laboratory testing to ascertain the exact alcohol concentration and to implement appropriate measures if the drink is found to be detrimental to health. A detailed action report is expected within a five-day timeframe.
Market Presence and Expansion
The beverage in question is part of a cocktail brand with an established presence in international markets like the UK, Mexico, and Ireland. It made its debut in the Indian market in December of the previous year, and its current availability is limited to Bengaluru. Sold in distinctive 180 ml ball-shaped containers, each unit carries a 15 percent alcohol volume and is priced at Rs 100. The brand's official website confirms that all its products contain 15 percent alcohol. There are indications that the company intends to broaden its reach to other cities across India in the near future. However, the brand's spokesperson has not yet provided any official response to inquiries regarding these developments.
