Bengaluru's iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium recently reached a significant milestone, celebrating 50 years as a distinguished international cricket venue.
To commemorate this golden jubilee, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) orchestrated a special event that not only recognized the stadium's rich history but also paid tribute to two of India's most revered cricketers, Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid. This landmark occasion saw the KSCA, under the leadership of its President Venkatesh Prasad, officially rename two prominent stands within the stadium in honour of these cricketing stalwarts. The decision was made to acknowledge and celebrate their profound contributions, not just to the broader landscape of Indian cricket, but also specifically to the sport's development and legacy within Karnataka. The event underscored the deep connection these players share with the venue and the state, marking a poignant moment in the stadium's storied past.
Legends' Emotional Response
Both Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid expressed deep emotions and profound gratitude upon receiving this honour. Kumble described the moment as exceptionally special and deeply moving, recalling his first visit to the stadium as a nine-year-old and now seeing his name emblazoned on a pavilion. He eloquently linked the stadium's half-century journey with the overarching growth and evolution of Indian cricket, expressing his sincere thanks to the BCCI for fostering an environment that nurtures dreams and provides opportunities nationwide. Dravid, reflecting on his long association with the venue, referred to it as a 'second home,' humorously noting that he likely spent more time within its confines than at his actual residence. Anil Kumble stands as a towering figure in bowling history, holding the record for the most Test wickets by an Indian with an astonishing 619 wickets, and also leading the charts for ODI wickets with 337. His international career concluded with an overall tally of 953 wickets across all formats, a record that speaks volumes of his skill and longevity. Rahul Dravid, affectionately known as 'The Wall,' ranks as India's third-highest scorer across all formats of the game, accumulating a remarkable 24,064 runs over 504 matches. His distinguished career also included 48 centuries and 145 half-centuries, showcasing his consistent excellence.
