alert. This warning encompasses a five-day period, highlighting the severity and persistence of the heat. The IMD's assessment indicates that temperatures are not only exceeding seasonal norms but are also contributing to widespread discomfort. This intense heatwave has led to several Uttar Pradesh cities being recognized among the country's hottest, underscoring the urgent need for public awareness and preventive measures. The prevailing dry westerly winds and a stable atmosphere are identified as key meteorological factors exacerbating these high temperatures and contributing to the prolonged discomfort experienced by residents across the state.
Hottest Cities Listed
The recent temperature readings place Prayagraj at the forefront of India's hottest cities, registering a scorching 44.6°C, a substantial 5°C above the average for this time of year. Following closely behind, Varanasi recorded 44.2°C, with Sultanpur not far off at 43.8°C. Other cities also experienced extreme heat, with Banda, Agra, and Jhansi all reaching 43.6°C. Further adding to the list of significantly hot locations are Hamirpur at 43.2°C and Fursatganj at 43.1°C, both featuring among the nation's top 30 hottest places. Even the state capital, Lucknow, experienced an unseasonably high temperature of 41.9°C, which is 3.4°C higher than its usual seasonal temperature, reflecting the widespread nature of this heat event across Uttar Pradesh.
Forecast and Precautions
Looking ahead, meteorological experts predict that temperatures will continue to stay above normal, with both daytime highs and nighttime lows contributing to sustained discomfort. The IMD anticipates a gradual intensification and wider spread of heatwave conditions across Uttar Pradesh over the coming days. No significant relief is expected during the five-day alert period, as dry weather patterns are projected to persist throughout the state. In response to these conditions, authorities are strongly advising residents to minimize prolonged exposure to the heat, ensure adequate hydration, and implement necessary precautions, especially during the peak heat hours of the afternoon. Specific areas like Banda, Prayagraj, and Varanasi are identified as likely to experience heatwave conditions, while western UP districts may face warm nights.
Expanding Heat Zones
The impact of the heatwave is expected to broaden its reach over the next few days. By Tuesday, April 21st, the heatwave zone is projected to encompass a larger geographical area, including districts such as Banda, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Varanasi, and extending to Agra and Jhansi. Concurrently, warm night conditions are forecast for western Uttar Pradesh districts, including Saharanpur and Moradabad. This trend is set to continue, with April 22nd seeing heatwave conditions likely in areas like Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, and Raebareli, alongside many of the previously affected southern and central districts. Warm nights will persist in the western regions. By April 23rd and 24th, heatwave conditions are anticipated to cover most of southern, central, and significant parts of western Uttar Pradesh, affecting a vast expanse of the state and intensifying the need for vigilance.
