Emergency Evacuation Incident
On May 5, 2026, an IndiGo flight from Hyderabad to Chandigarh experienced a critical safety event after landing. While the aircraft was stationary on the tarmac,
a passenger's personal electronic device, identified as a power bank, ignited onboard. This startling occurrence necessitated an immediate emergency evacuation of all passengers and crew onto the tarmac. Thankfully, everyone was safely moved to the terminal building, and appropriate authorities were notified promptly. The airline confirmed that passengers received necessary attention following the incident. Videos circulating on social media platforms depicted the smoke-filled cabin and the subsequent evacuation process. While the airline prioritizes passenger and crew safety, with the aircraft set for thorough inspections, the event has brought renewed attention to the risks associated with portable electronic devices.
Power Bank Air Travel Rules
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has established clear regulations for carrying power banks on flights. Crucially, these devices are only permitted in carry-on baggage and are strictly forbidden in checked luggage. Passengers are also prohibited from using power banks to charge their electronic devices while on board any aircraft. Furthermore, specific rules dictate that power banks and any spare lithium batteries must not be stowed in overhead compartments. Aviation safety experts underscore that fires originating from lithium batteries are exceptionally difficult to detect and manage when they are not within immediate reach, thereby posing a significant risk to those on board. Airlines consistently remind passengers to keep their power banks accessible throughout the flight and to immediately inform cabin crew of any signs of malfunction, such as overheating or smoke emission, to prevent escalating dangers.
