Bridging the Terminal Gap
Navigating between Delhi Airport's Terminal 3 and Terminal 2, especially with heavy luggage, is about to become significantly easier. A new pedestrian
subway is in the final stages of development, designed to offer direct and hassle-free connectivity. Currently, passengers face a considerable walk of approximately 750 metres, rely on shuttle services, or seek alternative transport. This new subway, measuring a much more manageable 70-80 metres, will provide a direct link, drastically cutting down transfer times and enhancing passenger comfort. The aim is to create a seamless journey, allowing travelers to move between these two critical terminals efficiently, saving precious time and reducing the physical strain often associated with such transfers. This infrastructural upgrade is a testament to the airport's commitment to improving passenger experience and operational fluidity.
Innovative Construction Methods
The construction of this vital link is employing a cutting-edge 'box-pushing' technique, a departure from traditional subway building methods. This advanced approach avoids the need for extensive vertical excavation or large-scale digging, a common characteristic of 'cut and cover' technologies. Officials highlight that this method significantly accelerates the construction timeline, making the project more efficient. The groundwork for this endeavor began approximately three years ago in May 2023, when a crucial Memorandum of Understanding was established between the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). This agreement outlined the responsibilities for construction, operation, and maintenance. DIAL is shouldering the construction costs, including any necessary utility relocation, while DMRC will manage the operational aspects, encompassing system maintenance, electrical and mechanical systems, escalators, lifts, fare collection, CCTV surveillance, and public announcement systems, ensuring a fully functional and secure passage.
Enhancing Passenger Convenience
The forthcoming subway is poised to dramatically improve the daily travel experience for the thousands of passengers who frequent Delhi Airport. With an average daily footfall of 38,000 to 42,000 at Terminal 2 and a substantial 1.19 to 1.24 lakh at Terminal 3, the demand for efficient transit is immense. The direct access provided by the subway from the Metro station to Terminal 2 will be a game-changer, particularly for domestic travelers and those with connecting flights. This development signifies a proactive approach to passenger facilitation, aiming to reduce stress and streamline airport navigation. The convenience offered by this new infrastructure will not only save time but also contribute to a more pleasant and less arduous airport journey for everyone, reinforcing the airport's status as a modern and passenger-centric hub.
