Poll Schedule Announced
The Election Commission of India has officially released the timeline for elections to 17 seats within the Maharashtra Legislative Council. The voting
process is scheduled to commence on June 18, culminating with the counting of ballots on June 22. This announcement resolves a significant period of uncertainty that had stalled electoral proceedings. The elections encompass 16 seats designated for representation from local bodies, alongside a crucial by-election for the Nagpur local authorities' constituency. This particular seat became vacant due to the resignation of Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who successfully transitioned to the Legislative Assembly following the 2024 state elections. Winners of the 16 regular seats will serve a full six-year term, while the victor of the Nagpur bypoll will occupy the seat for the remainder of its current term, concluding on January 1, 2028.
Threshold for Local Body Polls
A key prerequisite for conducting elections in local authority constituencies, as stipulated by the Election Commission, is that at least 75 percent of the underlying local self-government bodies—including municipal corporations, councils, and zilla parishads—must be actively operational. Furthermore, a similar threshold of 75 percent of the total registered voters within these bodies must hold their official positions. The delay in conducting numerous municipal and civic elections across Maharashtra in recent years had prevented this essential statutory condition from being met. However, with the recent conclusion of these long-delayed civic body elections, the Election Commission has confirmed that the necessary 75 percent operational threshold has now been achieved across the relevant administrative regions, thereby clearing the path for the official election notification.
Nomination and Withdrawal Deadlines
Following the official schedule put forth by the poll panel, the formal gazette notification concerning the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council elections is slated for release on May 25. Aspiring candidates will have until June 1 to submit their nomination papers. Following this deadline, a thorough scrutiny process will commence to review all submitted nominations. For candidates participating in what is expected to be multi-cornered contests, the window for officially withdrawing their nominations will remain open until June 4. This structured timeline ensures a fair and organized electoral process leading up to the polling day.
